Edit - Lauda won in its first outing. However, the fan was pushing.... scrap that. The fan was well outwith the rules.
What I'm trying to say is this: If ground effect is brought back, it would have numerous benefits. Downforce could be maintained, but with much less drag, and much less dependency on grip from front and rear wings - both of which require clean airflow over them. In addition, ground effect is more fuel efficient, as the car has less drag. Teams would favour ground effect over front and rear wings, and we could possible see REAL overtaking back in F1. Widening the cars would create natural drag, which would bring back the lost art of slipstreaming. Simples

Iirc the fan car was withdrawn after its first race, not banned (although it was shortly after that) it was within the rules since its "primary function" was to cool :wink:
The argument against ground effect is that when a car starts to leave the ground, it going to fly up in a much more dramatic way.
I think they've done a pretty good job with the current balance, the tyres make strategy interesting although maybe the teams understand them too well now, the drs allows drivers to attack each other and actually try strategies that rely on overtaking, plus they make back markers less of a problem.
I'm dissapointed mclarens problems have scuppered a good fight this year between alonso, Hamilton and vettel. Alonso has still had more luck than most, despite being taken out twice, but he has driven well too. Vettel has managed to score consistently like Alonso, had a couple more problems but had the faster car, I don't think hes been a championship winning driver this year. Hamilton has had the highest peaks of performance of the three but has had too many problems when he could have taken maximum points, he really should be in control of this championship and it's about time he won his second. I hope he has a fighting chance in the next couple of years with Mercedes but I have my doubts
