The extended warranty I can understand on the N54 though. It has some pretty expensive bits that do fail fairly commonly.

You do not have to get the car serviced at BMW to maintain the extended warranty.

+1 As long as genuine parts are used and it's a VAT registered garage

I’d be interested to know what those bits are?

I’ve noticed a fair few fall victim to failing hpfp’s and faulty injectors/rattling waste gates :o

Wow! I paid that for my service which was the 8yr service and i also got the brake fluid done within that price.

My reasons for main dealer servicing especially with extended warranty is there is less scope for them wriggling out of a claim when it’s been maintained by them. No arguments re parts, things not being checked etc.

I've wondered about this. How can BMW USA (after a class action lawsuit) admit it's a problem and recall 130,000 (?) vehicles, but in other countries BMW can say "Sorry, not our problem, never mind..." - for the exact same fault??? :?
Was there a recall for this in the UK? (The HPFP)

You don't have to get the service done at BMW to keep the extended warranty. They changed that a few years ago.

You're right, of course (although the Roadside Assist will recover your car only to a BMW AD, I believe).

That said, I wonder how many members have the Insured Warranty (which is provided by Alliance, by the way) and have used it at an independent garage?

I have the insured warranty and use a local independent sometimes. My nearest dealership is right in the middle of Manchester so can be a nightmare to get to and from. I tend to just use them for warranty work now since it can take an hour each way in rush hour traffic.

I have an extended BMW warranty and they definitely accept indy work as long as genuine BMW/Bosch parts are used. But then again, I have a really brilliant local indy.

Almost £40 for a air filter  if that's not a typo shoot me now

I was quoted £72 for a rear wiper blade at Dick Lovett's last week
One would hope that includes fitting (and a cup of coffee) while they fit it, at least... :o
