My daughter lives in SE London - we spent weeks trying to find her a seven seater car to replace her old campervan - she has five kids - she and my son-in-law struggle ,as you can guess to make ends meet. They are not on benefits and work bloody hard . We found them a VW Sharan that they love ( the first decent car they have owned ) Today my son-in-law goes out to check water and oil etc ( everything fine ) ,looks underneath - just checking over as they have only had it 2 weeks and finds a massive gap where the exhaust mid section should be - some arseholes have cut out the catalytic converter and nicked it !! They are coming down to the Island Tuesday for the Bestival with the kids so have no option but to take it to Quikfit to get it replaced ( £700 including the front and rear pipes that were damaged when they cut it out )

Hoping to get some of it back on insurance after excess - on BBC this morning there was a bit about even if you choose not to claim you still have to report an "incident " and the record of this is put on a national insurance database and subsequently your premium goes up ! you can't win !!

Quikfit guy said there have been a spate of this going on with Sharans and Picasso's being targeted. :x :x :x :x

You're supposed to inform your insurance company of any thefts/damage/accidents, but who's to say it didn't just 'fall off' and you simply had to replace it?

They are quite exposed and easy to whip off..

£700 souns steep though..... Depending on CC i think there under £100 for the catalyst itself... Not sure of the other bits though..

But there can only be an hours labour in fitting?

We had a few nicked from our Mercedes Sprinter vans at work. Problem being they are high of the ground so easy to get under.

The company have fitted a device now to make it harder for them to be stolen.

I was about to buy a Ford Ranger a while ago but the day before I went for viewing the dealer whole stock had been attacked overnight. All this because some EU relative makes catalysts, hey are not even a decent solution to the emissions problem.

Andi.

PS A cat for a 2006 Sharan 1.9TDi is £70.00 on ebay.

Unfortunately it's in with Quikfit now so I can't do a lot about it - I've told my daughter to ask for a breakdown on the receipt to see how they can justify this amount - you wouldn't expect a national company like Quikfit to rip you off but you can't seem to trust anyone these days .

That's awful, there are some complete b@stards around, I met a scrap guy the other week and asked him why they now pay for cars as opposed to my era when you had to pay them to take the cars away, he went through a few things that they get money for, £12 per alloy wheel etc but they got £400 for a thumb nail sized piece of metal out of the Catalytic Convertor. :o

Hate reading things like this, and then quick fit kick you when your down. It's like been robbed twice!

Sorry to hear about this - not much help, but it's happening all over, had a spate of it last year when a gang did 20 vans and pickups in our village in a night. They're back again in the area, advice from the police is to park edge on kerbs :o or put your vehicle in a garage. Last year's gang was caught shipping a container full just before it left UK !!

Real bad state of affairs.

However, got me thinking here that lowering your vehicle would act as a theft deterrent so must therefore LOWER premiums... Logic seems sound

We've got the car back now but she's understandably now getting paranoid about the same thing happening again - are these anti-theft clamps you can buy any good? anyone fitted one ? seen them advertised for about £100 but worth it if it works.Apparently Sharans and Galaxys are the most targeted :(
