EXTRAS TO LOOK OUT FOR

Ah - this is why the questions of what you're after are so important. I pay £250 fully comp on a 3.0i..lol

then you're probably as old as both of us put together?? also i'm in london, which really doesn't help.

The used car market has shot up across the board. People are holding onto cars longer now making 2-3 year old cars very expensive as theres a shortage. Its simple supply and demand and there isnt much supply.

Also the release of the new Z4 has rasied prices, not many people can afford 30k+ when they can get the older model for 15-20k.

To buy my car from bmw today would cost atleast 15% more even though its now 9 months older.

I paid £1200 to insure my 2.0l this year as i'm 25 with 3 points 0 NCD and 2 claims in the past year, i also live in a bad postcode. My renewal is going to be about £1000.

Thank god for classic insurance, that only cost me £200 on the mk1 mr2

Lots of people holding onto their cars and less credit means fewer trading in for a new car which means prices of second hand cars have gone up. Lots more demand for nice second hand cars as people aren't spending as much to buy new as well. Expect when more job losses and higher fuel prices hit next year prices will lower again as more people have to sell their cars :( If looking to buy soon I would wait a month or two till the first frosts and snow, always makes dealers keen to shift their soft tops so they don't get left with them over winter.

yes, but i'm only 26 and with only 3 years NCB....

I'm 32 on 7 years NCB

Obviously your circumstances are different or we'd both be paying the same....

All that matters is that we've both got the Zed... 3.0! :D

indeed ;)

I'm not a fan of taking a step backwards when buying a new car, so had to get something equal or greater to a 2.9 V6

Jeeze that is very interesting as i came to this market thinking all the nice cars were very cheap... suprisingly so..

I guess the problem is that my car which is probbaly worth in the region of 5.5k in 3 months time although its a hardtop might be worth less and hence its a catch 22...as i will loose out on the value of mine for the same reason surely?

2003 2.5l at £10 to £12k should get you something decent, but frankly don't set your expectations too high as prices are way up on 9 months back. I'd be looking for a well maintained private example, decent service history, lowish mileage. Forget hardtops and fancy wheels, audio, etc. and get a good solid example, else you'll be over that price real quick. I'd steer clear of the 2.2 as it was a shortlived engine.

If you're testing some see how they drive, check crease lines and look for work required such as respraing the front or kerbed wheels.

Auto is a dream btw, but each to their own.
So are you suggetsing now is a bad time to buy? how much more will i be spending for the same type of car?

Well pvr is right +20%. Does that mean now is bad or was it just a buyers market before and normality has returned?
Lloyds shares are up to about £1 now, a 3 fold increase on a few months back, but 2 years ago they were £5, so not so good...

Is late Summer a good time to buy - traditionally not, as prices are still on the Summer high and should drop as people decide to move on for Winter, but we're in turbulent economic times so who knows if the will go down as normal, up as the new Zed is too expensive, up because the economy is getting better.
That's a long answer to say I have no idea, but I'd put my money on them going down next, but frankly a car of this quality for £10k to £12k is a lot of car for the money.

What I am saying is on the age you're looking at I'd be looking private, well cared for by an enthusiast, lowish mileage, full service. Skip the expense of the dealer margin and if you're worried buy a warranty.

Oh - and yep I am getting on a bit now, so do get cheap insurance but at least I can run 6 cars at the last count :)

nor am i... i took a VERy big step up though. 1.4 corsa auto > z4 3.0 manual. :driving:

Going on book price my car is now worth about a grand more than I paid for it almost a year and 10k miles ago, expecting a 10-20% correction in the next 6 months or so if the economy continues to tank. Thought about cashing in but don't fancy anything else as a replacement just now :) Never a good time to buy a depreciating asset like a car, if you can afford it buy when it suits you at a price you think is fair.

i know of 2 - the zed and the X5. i'm pretty sure you got a jeep too... so what's the other three?

well i'm on three, so not too bad (although i'm soon selling the other two :P). i still got my Corsa and also got a E46 328.

each to their own, but like that sadsack Clarkson, I don't see the point in having a ragtop with a large engine....anyone who says doing 120mph+ with the roof down is an enjoyable experience is either an idiot or a dead person. Coupe I accept is another story.....

And its the old story, its not what ya drive its how ya drive it....I've embarrassed some big cars in the past with rides as mediocre as a 1.0 16v MIcra, so its not the size of your thingy thats the issue.

If you want ragtop enjoyment, still with plenty of spirit, cheap insurance, average 36-38 mpg even when pressing on, and easy resale, then the 2.0 is more than adequate TBH.

as for leather, well also personal, but I wouldn't dream of having a chavvy leather suite in my house, so why would I have it in my car? its slippery, sweaty and not very pleasant, plus it looks like a hookers saggy arse after its been sat on a few times... :fuelfire:
