Exterior Weather Seals

Guys and girls,

Could someone do me a favour and check the condition of the exterior weather seals that run along the tops of the doors and rear quarters under the windows?

Mine are all pitted and look pretty nasty, not what I'd expect from an 18 month old car! I'm sure on my old 1 series they were still smooth and new looking.

Thanks guys!!

Mine are similar but mines over 5 years. You need to look after them and treat them.

Try not to get any polishes on them, without care and attention the top comes off leaving a matt finish and it turns grey in the elements. You need some rubber restorer.

Hi Maniac,
This is about the best pic I can get in the wind and rain outside!!

This is on the passenger door, but all are the same.

Car is only 17 months old and has 8k miles on it, I'm sure they shouldn't look like this already. I've not gotten any polish on them in my ownership either.

Can anyone post a pic of theirs for comparison?

Thanks!!

I think that's how they should be, the seals aren't smooth but have a grainy rough finish to them.

When it comes to seals and rubber-work, Gummi Pflege is your friend.

Thanks Tim, that's what I was trying to establish, just seems odd to me that the finish seems "cheaper" than the smooth ones that were fitted to my 1 series!!

Yes I noticed it too compared to my previous 1 Series as I thought it looks a bit cheap and nasty :(

The edges that seal are smooth, the outer faces textured for appearance.

As said, Gummi is your friend

Gummi Phledge won't do any harm but it doesn't really do much for these seals as they appear to be more of a plastic than rubber, I tend to use Autoglyms Vinyl/rubber care but it doesn't really improve their appearance that much.

Sorry, don't agree.

Gummi every second wash, they retain colour, retain supplety and in the case of the one on the edge of the rear quarter window, stops the famous BMW window chatter.
