Extension to bmw warranty

My warranty is about to expire and BMW have offered the following for a further year:

Comprehensive (covering majority of components) £438
Named component (covering specific range of parts) £389
Driveline (covering engine, transmission and drive train) £329

I'm tempted by the comprehensive but thought I'd poll views on the forum first.

Go comprehensive. It's remarkable how bloody expensive small parts can be. Then add labour and vat on the whole lot and it rapidly gets eye watering

Or - Use the toffee tin approach and put the premiums away!

Having said that I went down the warranty route I'm probably not disciplined enough to put the cash away!

I recently had exactly the same letter about extended warranty with exactly the same prices as you've quoted.

They sneakily add on Emergency Cover (aka AA/RAC) which adds about £70 to the premium and a £100 excess.

Has anyone had any experience of ringing up and haggling the price?

Edit: Just did an online quote with Warranty Direct and got quoted £775.00 as the cheapest option!!

I like the idea of BMW warranty as I holiday in Germany most years and it nice to know that in the event of a breakdown its all in one package. Rac/aa or the like is probably ok in the UK tho.

After much reading around the internet and getting a quote from Warranty Direct (£775 cheapest using a BMW Dealer) I bit the bullet and rang BMW Extended Warranty Services (Mondial Insurance) and had a long chat with the bloke (Craig).

I'd prepared a million questions and tried 2 or 3 times to get the quoted price down with various tactics that work with most other insurance companies, but not with this one!

The price for Comprehensive was £360.17 with £100 excess and without the emergency cover (I'm with the AA) and this price is apparently fixed with the underwriter, who doesn't do any price amendments.

The bloke (Craig) said he'd worked for this company for over 2 years selling this product and has never seen anyone get any price reduction. :headbang:

Other relevant things I learned were:

a) The policy is fully transferable if you sell the car (a £25 admin fee applies)
b) The policy can be cancelled at any time, for any reason and you will get a pro-rata refund on a rolling monthly basis (a £25 admin fee applies)
c) There is no limit to the number of claims you can make, or cost per claim, up to the total value of the car per policy period.
d) There is no "No Claims Discount" of any sort, and the renewal premium will be exactly the same whether you've had none or 10 claims.
e) In the last 2 years, the premiums have only gone up once (about 2 months ago) and this was only £11.00 so any increase is going to be minimal next year.
f) Even without the BMW Emergency cover premium, I still get BMW Assist for free as part of my premium which is a basic roadside fix and/or tow only using official BMW parts which is fully covered under the warranty and no excess will apply. :)

I think I'm quite happy with the deal, although I'll only know for sure if/when I have a claim!

Go comprehensive IMO. It only takes one claim and your in "profit".

I went named component and wish I`d went fully comp - for the extra £50 you might as well go all in.

I went for the fully comp when my warranty ran out this year. 2 weeks later I had to have a new fuel pump!! Low on pressure! First sign was bad starting from cold. God only knows how much that would have been without the extended warranty!

I did argue with the dealer as it showed signs of this before the warranty ran out, and I told them about it! As it was I had to pay the £100 excess. :x Could have been way worse though!!

I went for the fully comp policy last year on my e92 3series. 2 months later my car kept giving me error codes pertaining to the steering lock. Took it to the dealer and left it for the day. When I picked it up, they had put a new steering column on the car! I didn't have to pay a penny but did ask what the damage wold have been if I had not taken the warranty which was 850 quid.... I recommend the fully comp one for piece of mind.

A friend up to road from me with an e85 had a similar experience - he pointed out a suspected dodgy battery whilst in AUC warranty but they didn't find anything wrong, then when he had the extended warranty they changed it, for £100 excess.

He also had a problem with the seat belt not retracting (and staying slack) and they just wouldn't change it. Then in extended warranty, they did. But £100 excess.

I might have got the exact details wrong, but basically they wouldn't do stuff on warranty, but they would on extended warranty....
