Extended Warranty

SO my AUC warranty is coming to an end in a few days and i am trying to decide if i want to get the extended Warranty.

I initially thought about Driveline to cover the expensive bits (Engine etc), but i noticed it says that the most they will pay for a single claim is £5000 inc VAT, so if the engine goes pop, it wont be enough to cover it would it?

Do most people go for named component? Its coming in at £59.90/month with £100 excess.

Decisions, decisions...

Binned my warrantee, the three local dealers to me all require too much time and effort expended to get results - I'd rather pay a specialist to do jobs and cover preventative maintenance too :)

This is the view I have taken on the m

Yeah, it is good logic keeping the money for maintenance. It just depends if something goes wrong doesn't it.

I have ad £1200 out of my AUC warranty this year, so I would be down if it happened and I didn't have a warranty.

I'm struggling to decide. I might start the monthly and have a ponder over the next month! On my last Land Rover, I never considered a warranty!

I've had the fully comp, zero excess with BMW assistance cover since my AUC warranty ran out about 4 years ago.

I was originally paying it annually, but swapped to monthly once I found out the premium would stay the same for as long as you continued cover.

I can't say I've had any issues with the dealers regarding warranty claims though, and have probably had over £15k worth of parts/labour out of them, including a new engine, VANOS and diff.

However, I won't be continuing it after this year as the car will have over 100k miles on it and the warranty will cover next to nothing - plus I'm still sceptical that all the servicing I've paid for has been carried out fully, especially when the checks included in the inspections fail to mention a baldy tyre or find the source of an oil leak after 3 attempts (loose VANOS bolt at back of engine) which my indy found on the first attempt.

Im undecided as to whether I should get a warranty or not. Small part of me says yes, but larger part of me says I'm doing next to no miles and if I save £100 a month as a car fund then any work that needs doing can come out of that pot. If nothing goes wrong I have a nice stash to get some CSL's/Hardtop etc.

This is exactly the point.

Mmm-five shows how good value they can be, but like you say, if nothing goes wrong then you have a pot of money at the end!

I'm not sure weather to go named component or Comprehensive! I'm thinking about 100 excess too to reduce the monthly premium. £85/ month does seem a lot of money!!

Another view - I have never extended warrantys on any cars I have owned and viewed sticking the money away each month to cover any problems or having a 'fix it' fund of £2k per year in the bank. I purchased a warranty on the M, I have just had around £3ks worth of warranty work carried out on the nav and electrics - freak incident but thats what a warranty is there for. It costs £118 a month no excess and so far thats just under 3 years to cover on the value i have had out of it. I will continue cover and now think its value for money.

Usage/mileage will also have to be factored in.

If I was only doing 5k a year the I probably wouldn't have bothered with the warranty, but doing 25-30k makes it more worthwhile and makes the cost per mile much less/palatable.

BTW, mine was/is only about £80/month, but I know that if I were to start a new policy from scratch on my car with its current 90k miles on it then I'd now be looking at about £200 a month for the same cover.

1800 miles in 8 months, weekend car and the nav melted - just one of those things £3k bill. Precisly what a warranty is for, that 'one' time, like pet insurance.

All very good information chaps.

I am swaying towards the warranty. I have just spoken to them and they will give me another 5 days to decide even though mine runs out today!

I'm fonancially up this year on the AUC warranty. Maybe I should use that as I sign!!

Mine is coming in at for fully comp with 36k on clock:

0 excess = £942 - 86/month
100 excess = £782 - 71/month
250 excess = £632 - 57/month

My experience of the Extended/Insured warranty is that it is getting harder and harder to actually claim on it.

I have the (fully comprehensive, zero excess) warranty on my M5 and my wife's Mini Cooper S, and have just let it lapse on the Z4. Almost every claim was denied as being "trim", "glass", "wear and tear", "water ingress" or just plain "no".

There was a time when the warranty was well worth having - if the car broke, it got fixed. These days it's an insurance claim - and one in which the dealer acts as the interface between you and the underwriters. Not only are the underwriters reluctant to pay up, but the dealers don't usually want the warranty work, as the hourly rate they get paid is much less than they can charge a customer.

OP - your experience so far is with the AUC warranty. This is a very different thing to the Extended/Insured Warranty, both in terms of what is covered and the ease of claiming.

Just my tuppenceworth.

Also depends if you any good at diy. You can retrofit nav for £600 as i and many others have done. £3k for nav repair is just dealer rip off.

Hmm...

I am pretty handy with the spanners and will give most things a go - i have done engine swaps, suspension overalls, brakes etc had a look at doing this myself. A new nav unit priced at Sopers was around the £1800 mark which they had discounted, this was with a wait as none were available in the uk. I looked on eBay as a guide and crappy looking scuffed units were £350/500 for the cheapest going up to £900 so if you are talking new items then no you can't do this for £600 currently. It maybe a 'rip off' as you put it but the warranty covered everything without any arguing or the need to get my hands dirty.

Absolute polar opposite experience to this. Warranty covered everything no question and the dealer has been great and didn't sway away from the work. They handled everything.

What happened to it Simon?

Occasionally my screen doesn't go up automatically but does as soon as I press the button.

Hi Dan,

Didn't have any trouble with mine until one day it didn't/wouldn't rotate and smoke started coming out of the unit whilst I was driving in the outside lane :o once I had checked it and it was obvious that the unit had fried itself i disabled the fuse and booked it into the dealership for it to be replaced. Just one of those things which isn't a tadts. Keep a close eye on yours for that day it doesn't/won't rotate like mine.

Out of curiosity, what work did you have done under warranty, and which dealership was involved?

I think this is key. Without a warranty there would have been a way to do the work for cheaper than £3k...even if only using an indy.

I don't have a warranty. These cars are pretty reliable and I'm putting together my own fund.

The simple fact is that overall there will only be one winner with warranties and that is the warranty provider. Yes, some people will get more out of the warranty than they put in, but the warranty provider will always profit (else there wouldn't be a market for them).

You need to remember that if you've claimed £1200 so far on the warranty, that an indie could have carried out the work for £600-800.

Always worth putting some perspective on how much money the warranty is "actually" saving you.
