Extended Warranty

Has anyone gone down the extended warranty line yet?
Mine runs out in a couple of weeks. The queston is whether to go with the BMW one or warrantydirect. From all accounts thier warranty covers more than the BMw one, but at a greater cost, but looking through the endless exclusions of what is, or indeed not, covered it is difficult to figure out the best route.
Any thoughts.
Dave

Yes, will let you know after tomorrow. Car is in with dealer for failed roof motor, if they pay up then well worth it, if not and it turns into a fight, then maybe not.

Got a quote from warranty direct @ £750 per year, however the roof mechanism doesn't seem to be covered

That will be an interesting case because warantydirect specifically exclude the roof mechanism.

I extended the BMW warranty which does not exclude it. Lets see what tomorrow brings :|

I've just taken out the comprehnsive extended warranty, which includes BMW Roadside assistance - seemed like a good deal to me

How much? :o Your joking right?

I would stick it on a deposit for a new Zed :)

I had the BMW (Mondial) warranty on my E85 and when the three years manufacturers warranty is up I will probably renew as before!

My thoughts exactly

I think off the top of my head i paid £440 for my BMW warranty, 1 lump payment as it was cheaper than doing it monthly and zero excess.

So far had the fuel pump replaced under it and a couple idrive niggles fixed. No hassle at all.

I think its quite a fair price, its a very good warranty and they way i look at it although touch wood nothing major has gone wrong with my Z its got alot of kit if it decides to brake would be eye-watering to fix/replace without. Plus will make alot easier to sell on when the time comes

UPDATE.....
Roof Motor rejected under warranty :headbang:
The reason:
drain tubes would require unblocking this would be a cleaning issue
this would not be covered via insured warranty
the motor has failed because of an outside influence and not a manufacture fault of the unit, this has
failed because of a cleaning issue that is excluded from insured warranty'

:o
My reply (short extract from a much longer letter)

Based on this I reject your reasons for refusing the claim, on the following grounds:

1.The blocked drain holes (claimed) are not the reason for motor failure, they are a contributing factor. The reason for motor failure is water ingress through the sealed protective housing, therefore this would be a failure of the protective housing. Something that is covered in the warranty under terms and conditions item 6 ' we will pay for damage caused to a covered part if caused by another covered part' .
2.The term 'Outside Influence' as stated in reason for rejection is not detailed as an exclusion within the warranty document. In fact the term 'Outside Influence' is not used at all under any context.
3.The unit has not failed because of a cleaning issue for the following reasons:
3.1 The roof motor is housed within a protective sealed unit, this unit is situated within a recess inside the cars body work. I understand from speaking with the BMW technician who carried out the work that this recess has 2 drain holes in the bottom to allow any water to run through. It appears that these drain holes have become blocked and water has therefore collected in this recess. I would assume that a sealed protective housing of electrical and mechanical parts would prevent water ingress under these circumstances.
3.2 The area described (the recess) is not accessible without the full removal of the hood structure a job that takes in excess of 2 hours by a trained BMW technician and falls outside of acceptable maintenance expected of the owner. The drain holes cannot be seen from below the car as they sit behind protective panels that would require removal along with the wheels. Again outside the acceptable maintenance expected by the owner.
3.3 BMW do not include a check of the roof motor or surrounding recess area (including drain holes) under any service interval until inspection 2 at 60,000 miles. The car is currently at less than 40,000 miles.

Lets see what happens next?

Marchantsuk,

Great response. Let's hope it gets the right result. This got me thinking - should we have a 'sticky' with successful warranty claim outcomes and the correspondence used to get there? Just struck me that lots of you are having roof motors fail, and are all seeking redress via different routes, even those with the Mondial warranty. It doesn't have to be restricted to roof motors. It could be a useful library for people if things go wrong and they aren't sure where to start.

the roof on an e89 is the main thing that I'd want a warrant for...
