Extended Warranty

The first of the 'M's are three years old now and I was wondering if anyone has taken out or been offered an extended warranty and how much it cost. My car will be three in June and I'm thinking of taking out another year.

Yep also interested in this. I'm looking to purchase and no doubt there won't be much warranty left on the car.

Had a look at Tesco Finest Warranty which seems to be raved about on certain forums and got a quote on a M for about £476.

I will be...in a year or so. Worth it's weight in gold! The BMW Road assist is an excellent service too! :D

I think it will be about £600 for the BMW one, based on advice that's the only one I will be getting. :D

BMW M cars are excluded from the Tesco waranty.

its over £800 for the BMW one I have just taken it out.

There are 3 options but the only one worth the money is the Comprehensive at £800 ish.

When I got the price through I did a :o

Ok so this is the exact price (dug it out just for you lot!)

With Emergency Service - £0 Excess
Comprehensive: £951
Named Component: £798
DriveLine: £623

Without Emergency Service - £0 Excess
Comprehensive: £873
Named Component: £720
DriveLine: £545

If you add the £100 excess on it reduces the price by £90 but if you make 1 claim (wink, wink) you recoup that instantly.

What I will say is they send you a letter or call you saying its this price blah blah blah and it depends on mileage. BUT it doesn't the price of warranty is fixed as long as you are under 50k miles... Which is representative of the above costs.

The only two worthwhile are the Named Component and Comprehensive and of the two Comprehensive is worth the extra. DriveLine has a claim limit of £5k which wouldn't cover an engine or a gearbox (with BMW labour). Named Component doesn't cover electrics (which from past experience can become the most expensive fix)

Any more info just ask but most can be found on the BMW warranty webshite... Bar prices

That is just too expensive. I pay £385 for a warranty on the X5 and would not want to pay that much for a car that I drive for 5k per year.

Tricky choice this. I would hope that a comprehensive warranty would be a no-quibble warranty, much like the factory one. Also, I presume if you don't keep the warranty seamless (ie: take it out from before or the moment the factory warranty expires) you cannot add it on again at a later date?

It is expensive for the comprehensive with no excess but it is a first class warranty. Remember if something goes seriously wrong with these cars, particularly the engine itself, you can be into mega bucks.

The warranty doesn't have to be seamless anymore. It can be renewed after a break following an inspection by BMW and I believe it is slighly more expensive once you do restart it. Full BMW service history is obviously a condition of the resumed warranty once it has been allowed to lapse.

I believe that once you let the car go over 3 yrs old even by 1 day then any subsequent "warranty" is more like an insurance policy with BMW and hence you have to have the car serviced at BMW as they can make specific stipulations, if you take out the extended warranty and there is no break between this and the manufacturers 3yr elapsing then you can get it serviced at Independants (using OEM parts of course).

This last six months I have had two warranty claims. One for the brake/speedo/ABS/etc control box and one for the sat nav screen. Either of these would have cost more than £1,000 to repair. The car has only done 15,000 miles. I agree that you would want the electrics covered as they don't seem fault free and there are an awful lot of them in the 'M'!

The only aternative would be someone like Warranty Direct. I used them before and they seem to be very good. But not sure of what the cost would be for a car like the 'M'.

Not true I'm afraid, it's still an insurance policy for extended warranty even if it has never been out of warranty and any BMW extended warranty will require a FBMWSH. The servicing at independents only applies to the first 3 years of manufacturers warranty. If you have gone down the independent road during that period then you won't be allowed to take out an extended warranty.

I have a 1 year extended cover from warrantywise. Thrown in with the car luckily but totted it up on their site and it retails at over 1k. I'm assured that they match the BMW warranty though.

Well I suppose £1,000 per year is a lot less than the depreciation hit if I was to trade in for something newer.

insurance/warranty waste of money in my opinion, customer hardly ever gains. Cars are very reliable these days, things don`t go wrong often. Put money aside into a 'car fund' each month instead to cover repairs, most probably you`ll be better off (unless you`re unlucky)

Maybe I should feel lucky two expensive things have broke while it was under warranty. I won't say the next bit as it'll jinx me for sure!
