Extended warranty - worth a grand?

My extended warranty is up for renewal, but it's over a grand!
Is it really worth that much or is it better in my bank account?

My car is an 07 facelift (different roof motor i understand). 70k on the clock and regularly serviced.
Already had a new roof, xenon light, front washer jet and rear parking sensor all under warranty.
What else can (or is likely) to go wrong?

All advice welcome.

I guess the problem being that as the miles continue to accumulate how much will the warranty cover or will the "wear and tear" excuse start to run rife?

Very true. Although the warranty is based on your current mileage, hence the price.
I would expect it to be the same level of coverage as a new car, but as with all insurances they will likely try to wriggle their way out of a payment!

I've always had a Warranty Direct policy on my vans. Always paid out and are fair.
I normally get around £100 off the online quote and get the excess to £0.

Wear and tear is covered and you can take it to a main dealer or independent depending on the policy.

I've getting to lower arms replaced at 93k on my van at the moment

Not worth it IMO, I haven't spent more than a grand in a single year on non-consumable work for nearly 10 years now, and that was a head gasket/cylinder head replacement. Even a new complete engine could probably be bought for a grand for a 7 year old car.

I pay £320 a year on my van. Since the Fsa was introduced warranty companies find it a lot harder to wriggle out of claims.

I've heard horror stories with warranty direct not paying out, but have no experience personally.

A grand is a lot of money, if the renewal was more like 300 then i'd be tempted.

I'm going to keep the extended warranty going for a year on my car. If I have a load of claims and it's worth it, I'll keep it going.

If I have no claims, I'll stop it.

With the Fsa now watching over, they have to follow what is in the terms and conditions, they clearly state what is covered and what's not. I've made approx 8 claims overt the years and have been 100% paid out. I Know there have been stories in the past, but no insurance company has 100% happy customers. And it's only the unhappy that are vocal.

What could go wrong? From my experience; alternator, wing mirror glass, igniter / xenon bulb, front control arm rear bushes, rear springs. But how often? If once only in 6 years, then it will average out to less than 6k in warranty payments, esp. If you're handy with your hands or have a trusty Indy.

The warranty business lives off profits. If I had an M I would pay it. The hand off being having a few thousand put away 'if' or when needed to keep the car on the road.

I will have repair bills, but with a 3.0si and a good use of AUC, then I can afford to gamble for now...

I agree with StevenH72. Under 60000 was good for no questions asked warranty work for BMW to maintain reliability reputation, but over 60000 and I'd have even less interested in warranty for a well maintained non-m.

Because of the milage if you put your excess up a little say £100 it makes a difference mine has 58k and costs £80 a month but had one claim for one xenon and the bill would have been £800 so it's paid for itself already

Only you can decide OP.

If your doing lots of mile might be worth it, but as above if your good with your hands or know a good Indi you might be better off banking the money.

IMO though £1k per year would be better in the bank, as you would have to be unlucky to loose unless you take it to BMW with every problem.

A Pair of Xenon bulbs can be bought for between £100 and £200 easily, so £6-700 less than the cost Tom quotes above.

Thanks for all the responses. Probably best to keep the money in the bank.
I don't mind getting my hands dirty so if anything does go wrong, I'll have a go (then take it to the indy to sort my mess out!)

I have this AA breakdown warranty cover on my z4.
I paid £70 for it last year and covers up to £500 a claim.
It covered my rear spring that broke last year.

Not a massive max limit but for £70 ....
