Extended warranty how much are they?

Hi guys

I have had my 35i for about 10 months now and the BMW warranty is due to expire after 12 months now I use the car at weekends so it isn't my daily car and I have always thought why bother paying for an extended warranty but this year I have had to get some slight corrosion on the roof fixed as I didn't notice it when I bought the car but they fixed that and then when having it serviced they noticed a slight oil leak on the gearbox so that was done under warranty and now with water ingress in my rear light they have agreed to replace the rear light unit under warranty and possibly the other side as well if I can persuade them :)

So now I am thinking it might not be a bad idea taking another years warranty on my 2009 car as that lot would have cost me a fair bit wouldn't it!

Question is how much are they and is it just one type of cover or is there a mind boggling amount of warranty options, any help would be much appreciated :D

Thanks

Look at the costs of the package over the year i.e Policy cost plus excess !
I found it cheaper to reduce the policy cost and potentialy pay a higher excess. - That was my gamble.

I've had warranties from two different companies (not BMW), they are not worth the paper they are written on. If you going to pay good money out Go for a BMW Warranty.

Thanks Mike I was only going to consider going with BMW and their warranty but I have to weigh up the costs as I have no idea what a years cover costs!

I would also check exactly what you are covered for with a BMW warranty. The jobs you have mentioned are pretty minor. I would want to see whether the clutch and other mechanical components are covered.

There's a full breakdown ( no pun intended) on their web page.

Unless it's over a certain millage i.e. 60k and then 100k then a lot is covered. You can pick to have fully comprehensive or named components.

Given the fact there is in excess or 20 microswitches in the roof, a comprehensive policy is possibly a better option. With roadside assistance and a £300 excess your looking at £36 a month or without assistance it's around £29

Of course you pay more for the monthly option!

But it stays that price unless tax causes it to rise the entire time you have it. Whereas if you pay annually it could change year on year.

For the OP, this thread may help

Or save the monthly payments and put it towards a new car every three years :D

That's what your wife gets you to do doesn't she Ron? :poke:

I wish !

In reality we tend to keep our cars far too long - well serviced but too long!
I don't know which is the most economical way to do it but I'm old enough not to care now.

Hmm £36 a month is sounding ok and with breakdown as well :D and if it is cheaper paying the full year then I would do that :D it isn't something I would have normally considered but with the three claims I have had would certainly add up to a fair bit especially if I can get both rear lights replaced on Thursday :)

I think you'll be a lucky man to get the rear lights replaced or an oil leak repaired on the extended warranty.
I'm sure they are both in the excluded cartogory.
