Extended Warranty Help

I am nearing the end of my 4 yr 50,000 bumper to bumper warranty and the dealership offered to extend it to either 2013 or 2014 / 100,000 miles but I need to do it soon since I am almost over the mileage hump.

I just got the car in December and am not familiar with the reliability of the car at all. It is a 2007 3.0si roadster.

The warranty costs from $2300 - $2800 based on when I want the warranty to expire, either 2013 or 2014. That would mean that I would need to average around $800 in repairs a year for it to be worth it.

What advice do you have in this situation?

Warranty is a risk, I have just taken out the full package on my newly acquired M Roadster because I am unsure of reliability, but I do expect it would be expensive if something fails, But that is because it's an M.
I didn't bother with the 2.5 I owned, but I had the roof motor problem.I fixed it myself - cost £300 for a motor.

Whether you want to pay for this 'peace of mind', or just risk the cost of repairs is ultimately your call, but selling on with a warranty commands a better price.

If the warranty options are the same as UK, and you want to take it out, you must buy the monthly option. This is because the payments will not be increased as you go over 60,000 miles, regardless of how many miles are done, and regardless of how long you keep the car.... you will always pay the same monthly payment as now.

If you buy the yearly option, then once you go over 60,000 miles, the next renewal will be approximately doubled, and that is the rate you will carry on at.

This advice was given to me by BMW Warranty, directly, when I phoned them and they also confirmed the monthly option is transferable to a new owner.

I have had extended for over a year now and never used it. However the law of sod says that the moment I cancel it, I will. It's simply insurance and thus the decision is whether you want to insure yourself against the risk of a repair really

Always a fascinating debate :D

I took the risk, but I'd had the car a year with the backup of the AUC warranty. Clutch had just been replaced and a new radio at the same time. I reasoned that for the money they wanted I could save it and use it for any repairs. So far (touches wood, famous last words an all that) the only things to go wrong have been fairly minor (or wouldn't have been covered anyway - brakes etc) and thus I still have 'money in the pot'...

you pays your money and makes you choice :D

In your case not knowing the car for long, I think I might take the extended warranty...

Supra98, Please let us know what you decide. I'm in the exact same situation with the exact same model car. My factory warranty expires in April. In the meantime, here are some potentially helpful links:

Some of the repair costs mentioned there scare me...

Warranty Direct rates the Z4 (model years 2003-2009) an 82.67 as to reliability, with 100 being the average for all cars. Lower number = more reliable. It also lists the percentage chance of a failure of a certain set of parts (braking 2.82 percent chance, axle and suspension 36 percent chance, etc.) This of course includes the older Z4 with the known rear spring failure issue, which (I think) isn't a problem on the 2007. I assume their data comes from claims made by Z4 owners against their Warranty Direct policies. I have no idea of the company's reliability. I'm planning to research it prior to end of April.

Thanks,

I am still debating. FYI I checked all of your links and from what I see, the car is pretty reliable (although those CV joints price is pretty scary).

I checked with carchex.com and they cost more then the BMW extension by a lot, cover less, and have double the deductible per repair.

I am leaning more toward no warranty as I treat my cars right and already have a good mechanic who can work on my car at a good price.

I'm curious about this too. My AUC runs out at the beginning of march. My car has already been in for a replacement exhaust because the hanger had cracked (£900 but done under warranty), engine sensor problem. Its now in for a service/MOT and has had the rear springs replaced as they were cracked, another engine sensor problem, rear park sensors replaced, and alarm fixed.

So is everything now fine, or will it just be more of the same?

and if I go for official BMW extended warranty, whats the main difference in the three different levels?
