Extend iPhone Y cable

Hi,

I have a Y cable I picked up from eBay, not the official BMW cable but this works fine and only cost £9 :-)

The problem I have is that I'd like to extend the cable so that I can sit my iPhone on the ashtray (I don't smoke) as it sits there quite nicely. I want to be able to use my tomtom on the phone while its plugged in playing music and charging the phone. I have tried this already with a USB extension cable (1.8m) and a separate AUX extension (3m), and it works great!!! but only for a few minutes :-( What happens after 2 or so minutes is that the USB control drops off, my car stops detecting there's an iPod connected and switches back to radio, the aux continues to play music though.

Has anyone done this? Does it work properly? What quality of USB cable did you use? (Mine is just a cheap one)

Any other ideas?

Thanks.
Lee

I have extended the Y cable using a relatively short 3.5mm to 3.5mm extension cable and USB extension and it works perfectly .I have now further complicated the setup by adding
a 30 pin to lightening (short cable) adapter to use iPhone 5 and still works flawlessly.
I would select the best length of extensions to fit the situation for tidyness if nothing else .
My Y is also an Amazon cable I have the genuine BMW cable in 120d and was able to check the performance of the copy against the original ,it passed :D

Hi,
Did you manage to hide the cabling somehow? At the moment I've slipped it under the edge of the leather on the centre rest, it's not great but just about works.

I'll try with a shorter and better quality USB cable and report back

Thanks
Lee

Mines an E85
I have a brodit holder mounted on dash and the single end of cable goes into the removable plate under dash where Aux is mounted
All the other bits are hidden in dash behind plate with a single power cable coming out to 12v socket and audio out back to plug into aux

Hi Lee - can I ask what lightening adapter you got and where from please? I've ordered the amazon y cable too (glad to hear its ok!) but also need the adapter for the iPhone 5 - only reason seen the one that apple sell at 25quid a pop!

Cheers

I am using the lightning to 30 pin 0.2m cable so bits go into the flap holding the AUX socket

Only the Apple ones are available ,cloners are having difficulty in replicating the controller chip in cables

I've got an aftermarket Y cable in my 2010 which worked perfectly with iPhone 4S. Have now swapped to iPhone 5 & fitted a (non-apple) 30-pin to lightning adapter to the Y cable. This charges fine but doesn't recognise the iPhone as with the 4 so still plays music through the iPhone speaker...

Any ideas guys? Wegras I've heard the same about replicating the chip... Will try to borrow an apple adapter from work to see if this may make a difference?
