Export Z4 to Europe/Netherlands

Hello all,

In about a month or 3 I am planning to move to Europe for a year. As I currently living in the USA, I would like to take my Zee with me. Now I was wondering, is there any fundemental difference between an European and a US Z4. Don't want to end up having a car I cannot get decent parts for or anyother wierd surprises.

I know the Z4 is made in the USA, better safe than sorry,

Cheers,

No not really, pretty much the same.

I think you can run it on US plates for under 12 months too as long as it's exported within those 12...the same applies for our cars over in the US, anyway

Your rear lights will be different and need changing. It may need them reprogramming. iirc some US flash differently to the UK, flashing the brake light on and off??

You may also need to do things like change the speedo from miles to kilometers, etc. and almost certainly undergo some sort of EU import vehicle test.

I would run some google searches on EU importing requirements

If it's temporary (he mentions one year) then he can drive it for 12 months as is (as long as its insured). A guy down the road from me has an E46 330i that was on New York plates for a year, though it's now on UK 53 plates

Not on BMWs...you sometimes get that on US models made solely for the US market - Crown Vics, Lincolns, Chevy Malibu, etc etc

Thanks Mikedav - that clarifies my mis understanding of the rear lights of US cars.

I would suggest Grooommm read the following site for more information as effective of April 2009 the SVA and associated requirements that have covered us for decades have been replaced with a new IVA Scheme which also includes sole imports from the USA.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motorin...hicle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/DG_177879

I'd also look at the current Temporary UK import requirements for a general idea of what can and cannot be done:
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motorin...cle/ImportingAndExportingAVehicle/DG_10014623

From there Netherlands specific requirements, rather than import only to find a major issue as each country has it's own laws within the EU frameworks.

Of course the car itself looks likely to be largely fine.

Whow....what a replies.

Thanks guys and girls for the information. Will be going back to the Nehterlands, so the steering Wheel is on the RIGHT side. For anyone that will be asking the same questions, here are some facts I found (Netherlands specific):

- If you have owned a car for longer that 6 months in a foreign country you don't need to pay BPM (Dutch car tax, pretty high). You will need to import your car as a household good.
- You cannot drive your car using USA license plates; see snext points.
- All imported cars need to be checked by the RDW (Road vehicle authority). You can get temporary plates.

There is more. Hover listing everything will waste the bytes on this forum. So if you need some help, just send me an IM.

Thanks again,

Grrrommm

used to live in the netherlands, there are a lot of imported US cars there, it is just things like amber indicators that need sorting, but this was mostly on older or US only vehicles...
