Explain this to me...

Monday, I went to my dealer for an alignment after new springs were installed. They had a 2003 Z8 in the showroom. Silver, with 3500 miles, it did indeed look brand new. Asking $195,000.

Now, I get it that they are rare - only 2500 or so ever made it to NA, and I get it that the 8Cyl engine and manual 4 speed is an awesome set up for a roadster..... But why in God's good name does this thing command such a premium price?!?!?

I personally think its an ugly car. I don't like it at all. Like the Boxster, it looks the same from either end to me and doesn't even have a mid-engine. At 200K, there are plenty of older supercars I'd be looking at first.....

No idea Rick, maybe as it’s a V8 and very rare. Just proves beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I think it’s one of the most gorgeous designed cars ever, I love it, even if it’s not that good apparently. Mega rich I’d buy one just to look at..

Just don't look at the Alpina version, if you think that's expensive :)

When a long-lost aunt leaves me $200k it won't be going into a Z8. I don't really like silver and most seem to be silver. I don't think that they're that iconic and certainly not beautiful.

It will be for an E Type or an Aston.

(Pity both my parents are only-children.)

Alpina version? New life goal has been added

Edit: just seen only 8 of these made it to the UK. Dream shattered

Absolutely gorgeous car especially in black like the Alpina pictured :sweetheart: The fly in the ointment with the Z8 is that they were all LHD  I was working for Halliwell Jones Southport when the Z8 came out in 2000. I remember that a wealthy Liverpool businessman took delivery of a silver one and returned it about a month later as he felt that fast overtakes in a line of moving traffic were compromised by the reduced field of vision he had sitting on the left ! :o

Get yourself a replica then...

As replicas go that actually looks quite good - but it really needs a V8 as well!

How anyone can look at that and think such a gorgeous design is ugly, is beyond me :o

It's just a beautiful looking work of art.

Bmw also pledged to support parts for like 99 years or something stupid. Not many companies out there made such an offer.
It's a pretty cool motor but given you can buy so much more for your money... you'd have to really really want one.

Not the kind of motor you'd roll up to the club to and drop knickers in.. they'd all go what's that shitter and walk off.

I think it’s a thing of beauty, without being aggressive like nearly all super sports cars are these days.
It also has a fantastic interior, it’s unashamedly retro but goes with the exterior perfectly.
But the reason it’s so expensive is because Bond drove one. That doubles the value instantly :)

I couldn't agree more!

Back in 2007 I got an invite to a test drive day at BMW UK when they were in Bracknell, and they had a Z8 parked outside with the top down. It looked even better in the flesh - just stunning!

I know contemporary reviews didn't rate how they drove, but there are plenty of other stunning cars now worth sh1tloads that reportedly didn't drive too well - Lamborghini Miura for example.

If I had a lottery win I'd still be tempted to put one on the fleet! :)

It’s a beautiful car but not worth 200k in my opinion. That replica looks brilliant. I wonder why the silver car in the video has no front indicators and the other two shown do. I’d be happy with a replica Z8 body on a rhd ///M roadster.

Gorgeous car

Does it need to drive well - nope, not really. You're either rich enough to not care and just want one or you're investing

2-3 years ago I was looking a them at £100k, now they are £135k for a high miler to £245k for a top end on Autotrader
Sums make sense to the people who buy these things
