Exhaust Tips

This thread got me thinking :|

http://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=46062

I've noticed on our cars the tips are like a matt metal finish, does anyone know what the finish actually is? I've used a little Autosol chrome cleaner on occasions when the end of the tips have sooted up but unsure if this will wear the matt finish off?

Cheers,

Tim.

Dont know what the base metal is but the exterior coating is Aluminium :)
And yes it will rub off if your too aggressive with the cleaner i know from experience

Autosol is quite aggressive, so will slowly remove surface finish . My 3.0si burns clean enough to never need anything other than car shampoo to keep them clean but they are kept waxed well .

Thanks for replies, thats good too know, I've only used Autosol very gently with no hard rubbing but knowing what the finish is now will stick to a mild wax :)

Had the same issue on my 330d coupe over 5 years i owned it and found WD40 very good at cleaning both the black residue and the tar spots without affecting the surface. After cleaning it left a protective film that helped reduce further build up.

Cheers for the advice, I never thought of using WD40 so will give it try next time :)

Just did mine, a pain to get off!

Looks like they are chrome plated as there seems to be some peel at the tip. Anyway cleaned them as best as possible!

Just to confirm, these are supposed to just pull off? I can't feel/see a screw anywhere like the last model.
Yep ! they just pull off,but may need a tap at the back to get them going
