anyone know if it is possible to buy stainless tips for the oem back boxes, mine are chromed and previous owner hadnt kept them well and then must have used wire wool so they are a bit scratched and it niggles me.

If you've looked closely, you'll see the OEM tips are held on with chrome rivets, so unless you can get some replacements, it would drive you mad, just as much, if you used anything else. Have you tried polishing the existing tips with Autosol and a polishing mop on a dremmel?

Alternatively, take your silencers to a local metal polishing firm and I bet they'd be able to work wonders on yours or they might sell you a small quantity of the right stuff to DIY

BMW don't sell them individually, but as long as you get the correct internal diameter I'm sure you could buy some off the shelf from an exhaust fabricator/Demon Tweeks/Halfords/ebay/etc.

thanks for the offer anyway, autosol wont take scratches out of chromeas its so hard, the stainless ones on the 3m at least they would polish up if a bit grubby. the four m3 ones would go well , but so much money, may try a bit more with mine first, just thought , drill out the rivetts and send for replating is a cheaper option. thanks chaps

Have just recently had the same problem as yourself.I emailed the guy who sells the M3 eurostyle tips and they wont fit.
My remedy was to drill out the rivets and take them to a metal polishing specialist near where i live and asked his advice,20 mins later and £25 near enough brand new exhaust tips .My tips werent scratched though they looked as if someone had put strong acid on them and kind of dulled/discoulored them.I had tried the dremmel home polishing route but would advise you not to waste your time.

Meant to say that these exhaust tips are not just sleeves of metal,they are a double walled where they fit onto the silencer pipe and are quite a snug fit even without the rivets,though wouldnt recommend not putting the rivets back in.

thanks d6gmb, think i will get them off and get a quote for replating, did yours come off easily once the rivets were gone, i think they are on tight as have read of posters here having to hammer them on with a block of wood and a large hammer , :?

One side came of pretty easily but the other side for some reason the rivets when drilled out jammed in the double walled part of the tip .Managed ok with a bit of gentle persuasion :wink: .
Hope you get them sorted,theres nothing worse than scabby looking exhaust tips.

too right , far from scabby but as someone who mops the whole back boxes now and then too keep them shiney, the scratchy tip issue irritates me, and yes i have already tried calamine lotion :wink:
