So who's changed their exhaust sound..? I fancy a bit more character, but don't want the car to sound like a Subaru (or worse a Corsa) with a Chav booming exhaust.

What'e everyone else done?

I’ve recently bought a 3.0si with a backbox delete and totally love the sound of it. It’s not actually too droney, a lot louder obviously...but the sound Changing up gears on the redline is utter ear porn. It cracks and burbles constantly every time I let off the throttle in all gears. :driving:

Here’s a little vid, it really doesn’t do it justice.

I have an Arqray backbox. I was hoping/expecting it to be louder than it is, but it’s a nice deep sound at low revs and comes alive at WOT.

It’s just a shame it’s not a bit louder, as my noise generator (both foam pieces removed) drowns it out

I've got a backbox delete with baffled tips on my 3.0si, to be honest it's way too loud at lower rpm for my liking. Sounds great at 4k+ and downshifts etc but everyday driving it's too loud and droney for me. Currently looking at other options.

I've got Mike's Zedshed modified back box on my e86 and, for me, it's the perfect balance of gurgles and tone that it should have come with as stock

I voted for full system, but luckily the custom cat-back system on mine was paid for by a previous owner!

Definitely sounds better than the stock system on my previous Coupe.

I put a Supersprint Race axle-back system on my Coupe.

However didn’t want to pay £1,800 for just a Supersprint backbox on my M3, and so I debaffled it and then welded in Supersprint esque pipework.

Either way, BMW’s systems just aren’t good enough!

I removed the backbox on my previous 2.5si and loved it. However, I modified the backbox on my current 3.0si and it is about half way between stock and full delete but doesn’t pop on lift off. Both have been weekend cars so I’m not bothered if they are too loud.

Eisenmann race on mine. Definitely tuned noise rather than just louder. Quiet down the Rev range but opens up past 3k and sounds lovely and metallic past that point. Lots of crackles and pops but not as loud (gunshot like!) as a backbox delete.

That is interesting. Once warm, my si (also a 2.5) used to pop and burble away quietly all the time on lift-off. You’d assume that would translate into lots of nice noises with a modded backbox and that the 3.0si would be the same.

The ///M doesn’t make anywhere the same amount of lift-off noise. I would love an aftermarket exhaust for it, but a lot of them are a bit “parpey”, which makes them sound like a chav’d up Corsa next to something like a Boxster with PSE.

Goes back to my point above an “all models” poll being difficult to get anything from.

Only got my Z4 last week but it's got an aftermarket exhaust on it (Powerflow). Mixed feelings as it does drone a bit on the motorway and sometimes would be nice to be a bit more discreet but the pops and bangs appeal to my inner child and the noise going through a tunnel the other day was pretty amazing! On the whole it adds to the fun of the car and I like it.

I had the back box removed in my 2.5si, I have mixed feelings about it.

It sounds so good when you put your foot down, it pops and crackles when changing gear, lifting off etc and doesn’t drone like you’d imagine it might at low revs but it is loud.

If you have neighbours close by and use your car daily I wouldn’t be surprised if it agitated them, especially when it’s started from cold.

I’m planning a quad conversion in the future and will be having a sporty box put in, mainly for the neighbours - although they haven’t said anything to date. If it wasn’t for other people and trackday noise limits I’d 100% leave it in, it doesn’t annoy me at all even driving down to the dordogne wasn’t too much with it sat at around 3k rpm.

It also depends on how much your going to have the roof down, any drone is much quieter when the roof is down.

Anyone ever had the noise tested at a track with no back box on an Si? I’ve just assumed it will fail so have been waiting until I get a box fitted.

Has anyone removed the middle box on an Si?
It will become boomy if you do that.

This is what an N52B30 sounds like with the middle box + kidney resonator removed and an Eisenmann Race backbox installed.
