Exhaust Ideas

I'm toying with the idea of changing my exhaust on my 35i, just fancy something louder and naughtier. Also, would a new air filter make much if a difference to the noise? As far as exhausts go I don't wanna spend crazy amounts, but I wanna make sure it retains the OEM look and that the sound is classy if that makes any sense?

Many thanks in advance :)

Both induction and exhaust could/would give you a more aggressive noise. Induction tends to be a little more subtle, obviously the noise coming from under the bonnet and also tends to only be noticeable when planting your foot down. This could be seen as the major benefit as when you're just cruising down the motorway it makes little to no difference to noise.

Exhaust can be a tricky one as the sound can vary from exhaust to exhaust and unless you find someone with the one you're looking to buy for you to listen to its pot luck whether it sounds like you want. Less risk with the quieter exhausts as the change is less extreme so you're less likely to dislike it. Benefits of the exhaust are potential visual improvement as you can chose the style of the tips, you usually save weight and you'll have a system that will last for life.

Both of the above 'can' improve power but on an NA motor you won't notice the difference so in my opinion I wouldn't even consider that aspect.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I'm not fussed about performance gains as such, but given mine is the twin turbo would I more likely see an increase than of it were an NA then?

Thanks again :)

Oh didn't realise!! 8)

Yes I would say you would! FI tends to be affected more by back pressure than NA so a more free flowing exhaust would have more of an affect. Although you're likely see the most benefit after a remap? I'm not an expert on this though :)

There are a number of exhausts currently at market for the 35i, Milltek produce a full system with secondary cat delete for approx £900. Build quality looks good and you would retain the OEM tail pipe setup. Eisenmann which I highly rate have two systems available one quad and another twin but prices for those systems start at £1900. Benefit i've found with the Eisenmann are that they are thin wall and resonate to give you a very 'raspy' sound at high RPM but a nice deep 'thrum' at low RPM. I had a race version on my E92 330i and it sounded incredible.

Or you could go with the king of kings and get yourself an Akrapovic setup. One of the reasons i'm thinking of switching to an E92 M3. The Akra is basically god farting out of the back of your car

Or take it to an exhaust shop and remove the secondary cats, retain the OEM boxes and you should find a less restricted note from the exhaust. Likely to fudge your warranty though. OR get a tune and your stock exhaust will sound like hundreds of little devils  leaping from the rear of your car :)
