Exhaust hanger snapped

Thought I'd investigate after comment that my exhaust moves up and down a lot going over bumps, and it turns out my inner hanger on the backbox has snapped and the bracket on the car is missing!

I've read historic posts about welding the broken bits together but I haven't got the other end. Any ideas?

Thanks

Any good exhaust shop should be able to fix thus for you. Or garage it just needs a bit of be go metal welding on. Don't listen if they say you need a exhaust!!

That's a good shout guys. I suppose I better get hold of the bits that attach to the car. Wonder how much BMW want. Anyone know of any good breakers?

Mine snapped the other day and I only noticed as my friend was driving behind me and said the exhaust was bouncing all over the place. Luckily for me the snapped hanger was still attached. Well worth a regular check me thinks as its a common issue. I wouldn't have known without my mate telling me as it wasn't making any noise. I got mine welded back on but like above comments have said, a good exhaust shop should be able to fix without you having to buy a new exhaust. Good luck.

The hanger broke on my old z4.

Had my local mechanic weld it back to the exhaust...he spent a good amount of time building up a very strong weld on it ..cheap as chips also.

I take that's for a new back box? I'm just after the bracket that attaches to the chassis. Is it even worth investigating if this is covered by BMW warranty?

If you could take a picture of which part and where it is on the car (just to confirm) I'll check if I can get it off my car I'm breaking (2005 3.0i).

The rubber part should still be on the car as it bolts on in 2 places. The bit you should only need is literally just a bent bit of Stainless steel bar around 10mm in diameter. I would think most garages could knock one up. Then its just a case of getting the car on a ramp disconnect the battery. Then position the exhaust and bracket in the correct place and weld it on. Try and make sure the garage use stainless steel welding wire. If the mig weld it. Or if the manual metal arc weld it that they use a stainless steel welding rod.

Get underneath and have a look there should be to rubber mounting blocks one at the front one at the back. If you have them its simple. If you dont you just need a cheap bracket.

If you go on to realoem. And put you car into in and go to exhaust and then exhaust system rear you can see what you need. Have a look you should have parts 8-9 on the car. If not that's all you need. The hanger on the exhaust has broken and needs replacing

Nope I don't have the bracket nor the rubber. Not sure where its gone but I suspect its been like this since I had the car, and explains why it doesn't rattle. Maybe that was some amateurs solution to fix the rattle! The Exhaust movement got highlighted a few month ago. I shook it and it moved, but not excessively. The rear bracket was all good but I didn't realise there was meant to be another one, as I couldn't see any other mounting points! :o

Thanks Andy. Pic shows the rear mounting bracket on my car and realoem diagram shows the front and back are same parts - 5, 8 and 9.

Yeah that's for a new backbox. BMW don't sell or repair the brackets / hangers.

Is it an Approved Used car warranty you have? The exhaust isn't covered on the mondial insured warranty.

No it's the Mondial one. Didn't think it'd be covered. Surely they sell the bracket which attaches to the chassis and the rubber hanger? Disgraceful if they don't!

Had the same thing OK mine recently, had a local garage weld it up, I then sprayed some zinc spray over it to stave off corrosion for a while

I've not had much luck with breakers, so it seems like I'm gone have to buy the bits new. Anywhere or any way I can get discount on genuine BMW parts?
