Exhaust bypass

It's been a while since I took one off. But is there not a copper ring or something for sealing the joint?

They are easy to realign just need to take your time.

Mat, to our conversation over PM, apart from the new clamps linked by Steve earlier in the thread, would you advise new mounting bushes too? I noted the image posted earlier showed a label near the mounts - presumably a new item from BMW?

The brackets/rubber were fine on mine, but the nuts holding them on were a bit of a bugger so I would get some WD40 on the ones on the boot floor and also the bolts going through the brackets onto the boxes.

I had one bolt on the exhaust shear. No issue but will have to drill out at some point if I need to refit. But I have read where others have had the boot floor fixings shear which would be more of an issue.

Would you like this mod doing to your back boxes or the internal mod? This would be cheaper and probably a better option?

Also i would think the rubbers would be ok. I cant see there being a problem with them.

I made a thread about this a few months ago and still don't know. I think I'd go with the internal mod to start with, as the video the chap posted after you'd done your work sounded spot on.

How much louder is this mod compared to a stock exhaust on a 3.0si?
Is it a constant drone or only louder on acceleration, and does it pop?
Does it sound any different to the back box internal modification?
Does anyone have a video of the mod, I'd like to hear what it sounds like please?

Pokes nose in;)

1 metal ring per bank
However I'd replace nuts and bolts as can stick and throw a bunny and sheer one
Ref pipes being straight
Hang in hangers firstly
Connect up flanges and bolts remembering ring hand tight
Do up hangers fully
Correct the pipes at the flanges connection:)

Could this be done to my 2.0 to get a better sound?
Doesn't dukelakeview's mod work on the 2.0 or are you running m rear bumper any twin box exhaust

Yup, I can mod the 2.0. TBH, I thought about the bypass pipe first of all, but was concerned with it knocking on the boot floor, as there isn't much space, and also I didn't think it would fit with my "Monkey Tips" and the biggie for me, was after listening to loads of videos, I just didn't like the sound. So that's why I bought and gutted a spare box, and my mod was born.

In terms of sound, a bypass pipe of 3/4" diverting a relatively small amount of gases from one of the two pipes entering the silencer isn't going to be anywhere near as vocal as the two 55mm pipes I weld from both inlets, to both outlets, whilst still retaining a proportion of the internal silencing slots, and all of the exhaust wadding.

Yes, the bypass is cheaper, but it won't sound anything like my mod..

Just for your info :)

Mike I have done a few exhsust mods bypass and other things. On an M54 what your doing works really well.

I did similar on a s54 about 3 years ago and it didn't sound good. Far to raspy for the internal mod to work on the s54 you need to cut out the internals and make a resonating chamber out of perforated sheet.

The s54 and m54 just seem to like different things.

I think on the 2.0, they way I would go about it, is same as the 3.0, but not weld up nearly as many slots, allowing more gasses into the box/wadding?

If you can find out the dimensions I can make you some? And I can fit them too if you can get to ox28?

If your offer stands I'd take you up on it! Could you also fit the bypass pipe and some of your exhaust tips? I'd want to compensate you for your time and also a few beers on top! I can make it down to ox28.

I tried to PM you but it doesn't seem to be working.

Precisely what I want to avoid and the reason I have not bitten the bullet until I saw the thread mentioning your work, Mat. Remind of the user again?

I cant remember who had the first mod with the pipe.
But the second one was for jimmybell and sounded really good.

Daren I think the forum wants you to do s video of your cars exhaust.

Happy to do Mat but they'll have to wait until Spring! Take my word for it guys, easy cheap mod that will make your car sound much throatier, Mat's the man for your parts ( 3/4" pipes etc direct to you to get fitted ) or if you're not too far away visit Monkey Towers and get the full treatment plus biscuits! :D :driving:
