Exhaust bracket - important?

Hey all,

Recently the bracket which holds the two pipes to the manifold at the front end decided it had had enough of whatever the exhaust was up to and set up camp on my driveway. I believe the bolts which hold it on are corroded to bits, as seems to be a common issue for this engine/era. Anyone know how critical it is for me to get this back in place??

Thanks in advance.

I am not sure about that part number 6 but this area is prone to corrosion and I got an advisory at the MOT with the inspector saying get it fixed quickly as it can become a deal breaker particularly on Series 3 BMWs. There are threads about it on here but basically if you catch it quick enough it is repairable. I took mine to Mr Exhaust as recommended by the MOT station and it didnt look too bad when everything as cleaned up and has now been fixed. Mr Exhaust confirmed that when this joint fails on early Series 3s they often go to the scrapyard as it is more costly to fix than car is worth. One tip is to make sure you get a genuine gasket from BMW as the one fitted by a garage is likely to be a Series 3 one and the gasket whilst fitting will intrude a bit into the pipework and restrict flow . From memory it cost me around £150 to get it all fixed with a lifetime warranty.

Wow are they really worth that little now?

No mine was fixable, its when new headers or exhaust are needed that it can exceed value of older s3s.
