Excessive oil consumption

I'm having a few problems with oil consumption. I thought it may be the ccv but replaced it and all the pipe work about 3 weeks ago. I don't get any puffs of smoke from the car so don't think its valve stem related.

The cars a 2.2 variant and has 105000 miles on the clock give or take. I had it serviced when the ccv was replaced. The oil I'm using is fully synthetic 5/30 bmw oil from Halfrauds.

I'm currently doing a lot of motorway miles. 180 miles from Mancester to Newbury then a few days 7 miles from hotel to the office then 180 miles back up north.

I top the oil up before I go so it's at maximum, then by the time I've done my 400 miles for the week it's back down at the minimum mark.

I dont see any blue smoke on idle or acceleration so the oils going somewhere, but no obvious signs of a leak, no oil on the car park floor or drips that I can see, but the oils going somewhere.

Any suggestions?

The last time my 2004 2.2 (higher mileage than yours) was in the local indy garage I was advised there was a small oil leak from the sump gasket. There has never been a sign on the garage floor where its parked every night but apparently there is some form of an undertray beneath the sump where the oil would collect. Will be done at the next oil change due shortly. Just a thought.

On a high milage car theres got to be internal ware i.e..bores and piston rings, 5/30 is a bit like witch pee, I would go for a heavier oil.
cheers bud. Baz :)

It's not always visible as smoke from the silencer, the cats stop a lot of it & the convoluted baffling in the rear box with separate wadded chambers stops the rest, if there are no oily marks on your drive it sounds as though you are burning it :(
Even with a new ccv & pipes there are other things that can cause it, the dipstick tube can gum up leaving the condensed oil from the ccv unable to route back into the sump, it then gets sucked into the inlet manifold & ingested by the engine.

Ive been here and done it all - scratching my head for over a year. Mine used to consume about 1l/800miles. Now it has done 4k since a change and still not needed a top up (and it feels faster also). Check for the following in no particular order. It could be all or any of them. My solution was the last:

1. Check its not dripping from somewhere firstly - i assume its not.
2. Check your Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG). This is where the Oil filter meets the engine block. You can check this by looking down the to the right of where the filter sticks up, with an LED torch. You are looking for a gold coloured residue on the block.
3. Check the valve/rocker cover gasket. There may be leaks on the edge or by the spark plugs (take the plastic cover off to check).

4. Add vacuum to your crankcase. You can add a 3mm breather pipe to the CCV from the inlet manifold. This means that there is less of a pressure differential in the cylinders/block when you throttle back. The engine is susceptible to ring flutter it seems and the lack of vacuum seems to let the oil blow by the cylinders. The extra vacuum helps lock the piston rings in place.

The following thread has plenty of information. Its about 1metre of 3mm rubber/silicone pipe you need.

And let us know how you get on!

apologies...
