Ex demo cars.. Risky?

I've seen a very good value 35i for sale from my local BMW dealership... Lots of toys etc... Question is whether you'd trust an ex demo ? From BMW stock, likely a journo car... Are they run in properly first or badly run in thrashed examples?

i would have thought its good way of saving on new prices, i would not worrry about it

Mine was ex demo.....and the guys that run them know they have to sell them again, they are not allowed to smoke in them etc etc....so I think they are fine, and yes you can save lots

ex-demos normally a great way to bet a nearly new car while saving £££ - if you like the car, go for it!

We've bought a few ex demo cars, never ever had a problem. Usually in the right colour with all the extra's. Go for it and save a few quid, plus no waiting time for a new one and the neighbours never know its not a brand spanker

Thanks for the feedback guys.

This car has around 10K miles, in blue (not my favourite colour but I'd not be unhappy with it), lots of extras. My only concern was whether it had been run in properly and or thrashed in demos. As its the DCT I'd be gutted if it caused me hassle or premature failure/wear cost me... would kinda outweigh the initial savings.

Warranty would take care of those concerns, no?

I think these cars can get driven pretty hard. I know a guy who drives demos for a different manufacturer and there is a culture of hard driving, at least within that particular car network.

That said, it has to be balanced against the high levels of spec, and good purchase price. Plus, like Playalistic said, warranty should mitigate any concerns. On balance, I wouldn't be too concerned if you can get the car at a good price.

Mine is an ex-BMW owned car (and so was my last Z4) and it's runs great! Has 17.800 miles on it now and goes better than ever. If your not buying new, better to buy one that's been driven a bit and owned by BMW from new than to buy one that spends days in the garage and only driven a few miles a week (you know the sort! Get clay bared more than they are driven!!). They tend to give you more problems!!

I used to buy new but having owned 3 ex BMW cars now (well, one was a MINI Cooper S) I'll never buy new again. Waste of money.

OP, I've had many demo runs where I've been encouraged to rag the b*ll's off BM's that were not run in! I would only buy a private 1 owner car in mint condition, and gosh, I even know of such a car for sale in the near/ish future in DSB  :)

If you see the stuff these cars are designed to put up with around the world when they are tested before they hit the sales rooms, a bit of ragging from some punter is nothing! :P I know a guy on the Jaguar prototype test team! Careful running in is a contentious issue these days also! Things have moved on since the 1950's! :P

I bet if you took a person who bought new and a person who bought an ex-demo at the same time, 2 years down the line I bet they have the same owner experiences.

Are you saying a demo is a safer bet than a 1 private owner car :? I think most of the cars available just now are Ex D though, but, If I were buying SH I would always go for 1 private owner :fuelfire:

If it's a car like yours, yes! It would have a heart attack if I drove it! :P

Joking aside, in 12 month old cars I bet the mechanical differences between yours and an Ex dealer car would be minimal if nothing at all!

Right then, looks like the 35i is a go-er... part of my reservation was that this will take me beyond my self-imposed budget for a car... things going wrong would need careful spending.. but then its also my dream car... sublime looks, and tyre shredding power with the ability to tour... I've fallen in love with the idea, I'm trying to be sensible about the costs... not easy. I'd still quite like to go on holidays too :)
