EWS3 - No start / no crank - AK90 write fails

Hi,

I’ve recently had my battery disconnected for a few weeks and have now got a no start / no crank issue (all other electrics work fine), I’ve bought an ak90 and can read key and ews data fine but the write process fails.

Any ideas?

I’ve tried cleaning the connection but all seems fine as it reads both ok, at a bit of a loss as to what to do now.

I would delete the ews

You don’t need to

If you unlink the ews software then the key/car start is not dependent on security protocols

One thing though, I tried bypassing ews using a 30 amp fuse but the car still wouldn’t crank

No you need to do it with software

I use bimmertools m54 ews delete

Dcan cable is fine (same as you would use with inpa)

Ahh I see what you mean, as in code the module out. I was thinking you meant the erase ews option in the AK90 software.

Before I spend the money on that ecu flashing software, is there any way I can confirm that the ews is at fault?

I only have a creator c110 scanner which logged the following but hasn’t returned since clearing:

0F power on reset
Tolerance of changing code increased with key

Ews will show codes if at fault

But if your reader isn’t seeing them it’s best to use inpa or ista to check

Yes find someone who has inpa or ista to diagnose the ews issue

@bigwinn didn’t we find before that if the EWS disagrees with the DME it still lets the engine turn over, just not start?
Just checking that the wording of the question hasn’t led to overlooking the possibility of it being the starter?

In fact, we don’t even know at this point if the battery is fully charged? Had one last week reading 11.8v that wouldn’t turn the engine over.

I’ve put a jumper on it as it’s been sitting and it was reading 12.6 at the battery, am I able to send power directly to the starter motor to rule that out?

I’ve never had any poor start issues before the car was sat for reference.

If I disconnect the ews then I get the ews-dms communication failure error, I’ve also tried removing the ignition switch too which leads to the key not turning at all, so I assume that’s working?

Fiddly to get at the terminals. You can get something like a broom handle in there and give it a good whack while someone turns the key?
Not saying it is that, but better than dabbling with the modules first
