Evoque with 9-spd auto box

Makes you wonder where diminishing returns really take effect in adding extra cogs. I've seen auto go from 3 now to 9 and each step gets smaller.

You almost get to the point of it being CVT, although of course very different technology
 
I went from a 6 speed auto box in my E53 to an 8 speed box in the E70, and that difference is quite significant with regards to smoothness of the driving. Not sure if there is any more benefit in another gear.
 
Exactly my point. 3 to 4 and 5 were huge leaps. 6 to 8 has seen smoothness, but where do we stop - 10, 12, 15?
