Ever had a day when....

Today was special...

So out with my mate and his wife (they have a SLK 350) on a road trip to the East Coast - some great roads and scenery - Sandsend, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, Scarborough, a couple of laps of Oliver's Mount and then towards the end of the day, before dusk a return on the Helmsley to Stokesley B1257 one of our favourite roads.

Ever have a day when you end up on your favourite road and there is no other traffic - you get a clear run from one end to the other - it was driving heaven!

Happened once before - a return from the Lakes one mid April evening driving from Melmerby over Hartside to Alston - only saw two cars the whole way - an unbelievable drive.

Ever happen to you?
 
I drove to Kircaldy once and took a road off the M74 ( iirc ) which came out just south of the Forth Road Bridge, fabulous :driving:
 
great days indeed - my trip to skafell and back one day last summer was very similar - blinding roads and weather, one of those days ...
 
Yes I think it was the road between Market Harborough and Melton Mowbray. Full of dips, elevation changes,fast sweeping bends and no traffic.

Perhaps we have the makings of an East Midlands meet here. I know a very nice pub we can finish at for Sunday lunch too. :thumbsup:
 
Would suggest you are very careful on that particular road which has loads of accidents involving motor cyclists. The dips don't help. I'm not sure about the 'no traffic ' comment either. That may have been a 'one off' from my experience. :o
 
My parents (and I) used to live on the b6047 (harborough to melton) road just outside twyford and its not quiet!

An amazing road though, one of my local faves. Sunday early is best.

Lovely run from melton (where I am) to harborough, nip into waitrose for a free cup of tea (courtesy of my waitrose card) - boom, in the car and drive back.

East mids meet - count me in.
 
Perhaps it's dependent on time of day. IIRC it was a nice sunny evening about 8pm midweek so probably not representative of a typical day.

You don't have to speed to get enjoyment from that road.

I think you may have been lucky. Agree about the speed comment but the B6047 road isn't very wide and it seems to be mostly motor cyclists who take a chance. It's only about 8-10 miles from where I live but I don't motor on it often and only usually cross it or cycle on very short stretches of it when I'm out on my road bike and tend to favour the small lanes either side of it which are very quiet with very light traffic.

The Ashby Folville Classic Cars and Bikes monthly meet, discussed on this forum a few weeks back, is situated just off that road north of Tilton on the Hill. The first one this year is on the 9th April.

It's rare to get a road to yourself these days - I was highlighting the fact that only on two occasions had I been able to enjoy a road without other traffic holding up proceedings. It was a surprise, a joy and is one of the drives that will remain with me forever - as was the one-off unimpeded run from Melmersby to Alston over Hartside - wonderful. Driven both these roads many times but only had the golden moment once at each.

P.S. My wife and I have driven both roads many times on motorcycles too - both are potential death traps - as are many roads - please do take care but I hope you experience that rare moment when you have the road to yourself - brilliant!
