Depends where you live. A lot of my friends who have brought first homes have all been 250k - 300k.

These are people on Normal salaries, working for deposits etc. Teachers, Surveyors, New Doctors etc.

That's for a mix of 2 to 3 bed houses. When I buy one, I expect it will be a similar amount.

Fair enough...

But if the bank will lend 3.5 x salary as a sole buyer, then even with a great deposit you need to be on 60k-70k a year to afford a house of that price..

That is not a "normal" salary...

70k per couple, 3 times mortgage = 210k, plus 20% deposit will get you to £250k. I would say an average of 35k per person in the couple is a normal salary for a young professional!

No has brought on there own though, for the reasons you have stated. Buying as a couple is the only way, but that is the price band most people here aim for.

Anyways, shouldn't we all be worried how much money we have lost over night on our Ms!

Yep..

Suppose it depends on where in the UK you are too..

£35k is well above average earnings though i suspect. Isnt the figure around £28k ?

Oh do keep up :)

Is it me but is there not quite a high hit rate of Ms for sale ending up on here rather than going to the wider public...

The titanium silver at Norwich sports cars is on here, one of the two sepangs was at the London meet I bought the one up for sale up here , Simon has made a purchase of the peachy Interlagos.

I think the OP was implying that the general public was only comparing Autotrader prices for the actual value of the cars, seems to not quite tally up with the fact like you mentioned that most of the peaches are indeed being bought by members or enthusiasts on here that will pay top price for decent cars.

Proves again that spec and condition do matter, and worn seat bolsters and scuffed wheels will put people off despite it only costing x to fix.

I'm a long standing forum reader (dreaming of a z4mc purchase..) but never bothered to post... merely stalking!.. but i like this thread so it's time to get involved!

Interesting thread for me as i'm keen to see z4mc's drop in price so i can finally buy one.. but equally i'm in the middle of the car/house/savings priorities dilemma.

From my perspective, i'm a reasonably well paid 25yo, even for London - but i won't be anywhere near property purchase for a few years at least. Consequently i'm keen to invest/enjoy a z4mc in the hope it maintains some value (later swappable for part of a house deposit) and its a fraction of the cost of a house deposit in my area. Equally i want to enjoy a Z4M before they disappear and the only thing i can have fun in is a supercharged Renault Twizy.

If you think people my age should be looking to jump onto the property ladder then you really need to look again at salaries and house prices/deposits. Houses in my area are 3-400k for a small 2 bed maisonette so totally untouchable. I know only a few people at my age, even in 'The City', that earn 1/6th of 400k, and they, nor 'Bank of Dad' have an 80k lump sum to chuck at a small flat. I'm (like most of my friends) trapped between high rent and unrealistic house prices. The same 2 bed flat will rent for £1400 a month. I tell people how much i pay in rent and they gasp asking why i dont buy a house ... i can only really reply with "do you have 80k to lend me?"

If young professionals are earning average 35k outside of London, i'm in the wrong industry. It sucks to be in my age/salary bracket at the moment but i really do feel for those who arent as lucky as i've been. Outside of London aged 20-25 it's hard enough to get a job at all at the moment (I looked..), nevermind a well paid one, with the ability to save for a house.

Anyway - interesting topic, brings out lots of opinions from all over the country (/world?)!

On topic - i've personally been tracking Z4M prices for the last year and i've noted a significant drop recently. Probably partly due to winter but equally i think the recession really is biting those on the edge of affording the running costs. If you're selling a Z4M and expecting 20k for it i think you're in for a shock...

Great frist post jimmybell. Welcome to the forum and ///M mania!!

Like said if you go and look at those cheap Z4Ms you will see they are cheap for a reason. Lots of genuine and hidden reasons for selling. Buying it isnt really the problem its maintaining it to a standard, unfortunately many dont. Just buying a set of tyres your looking at £750-1200 depending on your preference. Say it needs new pads and discs all round looking at a fair sum, servicing £800-1100 for a service 2, the list goes on... a fairly cheap one by the time your finished may turn itno quite an expensive one... so you have to be careful but find the right one and its a great purchase but for a good one 15k seems about right atm 16-18 for a spotless one and <15 there may be some work to do.

Although im sure you know all of this and there is plenty of info on the forum

Enjoy the search! Hope you find a nice one.

Welcome Jimmy...

London house prices are so far and away from the normal prices that it just cant be equated with the rest of the UK..

400k for a maisonette is ridiculous....But i know of someone who bought a flat in London for less than 80k earlier in the year... Probably not the best area to live in,but there are plenty of properties out there if need be.

My brother in law worked for Publicis in London, its one of the UK's top advertising agencies. He was on 55k a year IIRC and he couldnt afford to buy anywhere that he "might" want to live,in the end he realised the futility of home ownership in London and moved to the Midlands,he took a 20k a year paycut but lives in a small village in a beautiful barn conversion now.

Many people would dream of being on 35k a year......Never mind a 70k family income!!

you'll all be pleased to know i got very close to a 350z purchase as its a great car for the money... but with Z4M prices moving in my favour its just no competition! :D

i think the answer for the property ladder is to just get on the ladder regardless, use tenants to pay the mortgage and attempt to upgrade as and when you can! though even with the worlds beat xmas bonus i'd be wanting the Z first and house second.. least on this forum there will be people who understand! im lucky my mrs is a big fan of them too!

Serious question. What exactly is the point in owning a Z4M, or for that matter any high performance sports car, whilst residing in London? Surely the opportunity of using it to it's full potential are severely limited?

I live in London and have 2 cars. One is my daily drive and the Zed is my weekend toy - for driving mostly out of town. Just because someone lives in London doesn't mean they can't have a high performance car.

And besides I've put on 9000 miles since April so obviously managed to drive it about.
