European plates

So I see some people talk about having a "57 plate" or something. Just curious.. I know it's in relation to the year of the car. So what "plate" would I happen to have?

Build date of the car is august 2003. I'm the second owner, too.

This is kinda out there, so apologies!

It goes by when it was registered not built here, so for your car it would be 03 if it was registered before September 1st and 53 if it was after.

Not sure who thought it was a good idea :scratchhead:

Hey there, the "plate" you would have would depend on when the car was first registered. if registration date is between March 2003 and Sept 2003 then its '03' plate, if its between Sept 2003 and March 2003 then a '53' plate. of course this is Great Britain's system, other European countries are different.

We used to have a simple system where the letters of the alphabet where used chronologically as the last letter in the plate. This told you the year of registration. But then we ran out of alphabet letters (amazingly nobody in the Government seemed to predict this!). So then they realised they could make a really complex system that allows them to sell us "private" plates and create yet more revenue. For example, i have a car that was registered at SW58 CZH - the S is for Scotland, the W is the office of the transport department where the car was registered, the 58 means it was registered after 1st September 2008 and before 1st March 2009, the CZH means nothing and is random. Phew - stupid or what!

I could buy a plate that reads MY07 ZMC from the transport department (DVLA) for a tidy sum. Around £995 or so.

Just realised that this probably makes your question even more complicated and you have now commited suicide. Sorry about that! :o

My car has a private plate in the UK, so no year mention at all but if I sold it, it would get a plate from the year it would have been registered but as of now whilst it has my plate on it, there is no number history available for it nor could anyone actually find out either without having access to the VIN of course.
