European Driving

I know that some cars with projectile lights have a switch on them that moves the position of the dipped beam. This is used when driving a right hand drive car on mainland Europe. Does the new Z4 have this facility or do you need to attach beam converters to the headlights?

I think there have been some threads on this but no definitive answer. I asked BMW when i first was going to france and they deny there is a switch on the e89. If anyone has a solution for this i'd love to hear it too as trying to correctly fit beam deflectors sounds like a nightmare and i have no wish to pay bmw each time i come and go to europe.

I've always used the Halfords converters in the past. Here's an exert from their site - note what it says about clear lenses and projector lights. Looks like a lot of manufacturers don't fit anything to change the light pattern, BMW being one of them.

>>>Halfords stock a wide range of products for European and continental motoring including travel to France, Spain, Italy and Germany. Halfords Car Headlamp Converters,or headlight beam benders fit most modern cars and do not affect the colour of the headlights.

Halfords headlamp converters from Eurolite are easy to fit and are supplied with individual fitting instructions for the latest 'Clear Glass', 'Projector' and 'Xenon' headlights, along with instructions for the earlier 'Glass Line Patterned' headlamps. Each pack contains 1 pair of headlamp converters and full instructions.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

UK vehicles are designed for driving on the left-hand side of the road. This means when you use your vehicle in countries where you drive on the right (most of Europe), you will dazzle oncoming drivers at night. If you're driving to the Continent then you must adjust the headlight beam pattern to suit driving on the right so that the dipped beam doesn't dazzle oncoming drivers. You will need to fit a set of Halfords headlamp beam converters. These self-adhesive masks blank out the part of the beam which could dazzle oncoming drivers. If your car has twin headlights, you need only mask the outer pair. Some more modern cars have special clear lenses or projector lights, which will need the masks to be fitted in a particular way - refer to the headlamp converter instructions.

Never go abroad to Europe without adjusting the headlamp pattern of your vehicle as it is a compulsory requirement in most countries. Remember to remove the headlamp converters as soon as you return to the UK.<<<

BMW say they have to be adjusted in their workshop. I and many others have travelled throughout Europe without any adjustment or stickers without a problem as it appears that the vertical cut off of these lights is such that they do not dazzle drivers on the other side.

+1 - I've always just wound the headlight adjuster down a bit on any car I've driven on the continent (and I have done regularly).
