Euro speeding

If you get a ticket in a hire car it goes to the hire car company. They will charge you an extra administration fee for processing that fine. Ironically that fee is usually higher than the fine (especially if its only 20kph speeding in germany).
I cant remember if they automatically charge it through your credit card details

Speed cameras in Germany are grey and seem to be hidden, no speed limit signs pre villages so it all seems to be biased in favour of our euro cousins !
The village marker (name) is the speed restriction in Germany, usually yellow sign with black lettering

Isnt that pretty much standard in the whole of mainland europe?

To stir up an old thread....

I had the good fortune to have the hire car I picked up in Stuttgart on Monday upgraded to a Ford Mustang 5.0. Long story short after some considerably faster than UK blasts I drove through a speed restricted zone on the A8 (I think it was 110) and got flashed by a front facing red camera. I think I was doing about 130. Anyone know how that is likely progress......?

I was just chatting to a friend last night who did a very similar thing to you in his UK registered car and was quite shocked to find a fine arrive by post to him in the UK. Photo of his face, (even though obviously he was in the equivalent passenger seat), luckily the fine was just 30e or something and I don't think they have the right to apply points to your license. We both have set cameras off in France with no repercussions as of yet.
With a hire car, the hire company will surely chase you for the fine + admin fee I fear.

In 2016 I got flashed in a German village. Think the limit was 20kph (a silly speed limit) and we were on a spirited drive in the black Forrest. Nothing ever came of it. Front facing grey camera.

I think the fines chasing rules came into force 2017.

What happens if you don’t pay the fine?
Depends on country. Never ignore a Swiss fine. If it is a big fine, change the car plate to avoid anpr type stops.

Hire car is German though, a different matter. I notice more and more UK registered cars getting fines as well.

My last run last year was still clean though for my UK registered car despite flashes.

Indeed , i triggered a fixed camera just outside Calais exactly a month back & nothing arrived through post , it appears the plans to introduce a reciprocal arrangement with France RE speed fines was shelved with the brexit vote :) another plus point :P
As for Newbers with the hire car  i fear a fine but no points could be the outcome there :(

I read in the French press last year that even though the gendarmes can now chase up speeding fines into England they haven't bothered yet .
I triggered a camera last year and also heard nothing , just be careful of the mobile units or you'll have an escort to the cash machine if you don't have the necessary readies in your pocket .

That was lucky then! I certainly wasn't doing 20kph!

Hire car and private car are very different. If the local authority passes a fine onto a hire car company, it's very highly likely they will pass on to the hirer, via the card the vehicle was hired with.

Private cars/bikes, they have no powers to endorse your British licence and are only likely to fine you if you're stopped at the time the offence occurred.

Yep, the hire company will pass on your details and you’ll get fined. No way out I’m afraid.

I’ve been doing Euro trips on the bike for a few years now. What I can tell you is this.

1. If you hire a car in Europe, the hire company WILL pass on your details to the relevant authorities, and you will get fined. There’s no way out of this.

2. If you take your own bike/car over the channel, then the camera will flash if you speed, BUT there’s a privacy law of some sorts where the UK doesn’t share details of the Reg number with European authorities, and it costs many euros to persue you for the fine, and if it’s a basic speeding fine, nithing comes of it, and you won’t hear anything.

3. If you have many speeding tickets/ camera flashes on your hoons abroad over the years, your Reg number will get flagged up with some ferry or Chunnel people( I had to change my plate to a private plate because of this).

4.if you DO get stopped and do have outstanding speeding tickets from previous years AND NOT PAID with the car/bike that you’ve been taking over for previous years and racked up flashes on the road side camera, then you’re in trouble. Big trouble ( unless you change you plate to a private one)

5. If you speed in Switzerland and get caught, your fooked... and there’s Police everywhere, especially at the border into Italy/Germany waiting for you.

P.s, most of Europe don’t have APNR.

Love, a seasoned euro hooner.

2) That changed in 2017 and was nothing to do with privacy, it had something to do with that the UK did not feel that the balance of cost versus profit was worth it.

4) Just thinking about that one, what is the minimum cost to get a temporary plate assigned. Is it two times £80?

Then add the charges the insurance company makes x2

I don't like the sound of no 3 & 4  i reckon in 15-20 years French driving ive triggered maybe 15-20 fixed cameras & stopped roadside once ( wasn't asked for any paperwork for myself or vehicle whatsoever , simply signed a document they gave me & handed over 90eur in cash )
Makes you wonder about using fake plates whilst over the channel :?

The most disconcerting thing we’ve ever come across, was in Prague, after a hoon through Leipzig onto The Czech Republic.
We got stopped and guns drawn on us. A little bit of poo came out I can tell you.
