EU May Order Speed-Limiters Fitted To UK Cars

its not hard to do technically, the Nissan gtr combines its gps with its ecu to derestrict itself if you go on a track

Excessive speed is often cited as a contributory aspect to accidents, but I don't think that excessive speed is the main reason in many cases.

I think our motorways are fairly safe, we include children running in front of cars in those statistics, and they are rarely on the motorways.

yes but is that not a fly by wire car?

time to go out and buy something old fashioned with carbs and a good old cable .... capri gear anyone  :driving:

I think it's a good idea & it would save me a fortune in petrol as I couldn't enjoy a fairly quick car anymore so I could invest in a seriously economical car!

In some ways I understand it, all the do gooders moan about people speeding but it's easy enough to just limit the cars to the speed limit but they keep manufacturing faster & more powerful cars & tbh there isn't any point having a quick car if you aren't going to use it & enjoy it. :driving:

Really interesting story & I would imagine eventually it will happen.

i wonder whether if you combined it with something that mapped it to the density of traffic on the roads whether you could achieve more efficient traffic control on busy roads.

i imagine the costs and maintenance would be huge, i think they manage to lose money on the congestion charging in Central London, and that looks fairly simple to administer

It's almost enough to make me vote UKIP!

We have the safest roads in Europe already. Let's get out of Europe before it turns in to a fully blown dictatorship.

It'll never get through for 1 simple reason - the huge speeding revenues would be slaughtered overnight, especially if it adapted your speed to your location in residential areas.

Can guarantee loss of govenrment revenues - idea shelved.

EDIT - was also thinking of motorways that go through / over residential areas - one second 70mph, next 20mph special zone - auto brakes full on. Who's liable then???

I don't want this to happen, but I have read that the average speed cameras used on sections of motorways along with no overtaking do actually improve the flow of traffic.

I read that too, it's on the VYSIONICS website. Oh and guess what, they deal and sell in SPECS average speed cameras!!
They probably had some study done which they paid for to prove it. It's a load of b******cks!!!

Don't believe all this propaganda, it's all about businesses taking more of our money for doing something we don't need to be done.
It's a false business like the congestion charge.

That's also the reason that it will never come to pass on this side of the pond as well...

When will these politicians learn that it's not speed that kills it's bad drivers.

I saw it on the BBC program about swams, they were likening it to ants who travel at a steady pace, don't overtake etc. Could still have come from YSIONICS though I guess.

Except the government banned smoking in enclosed public / work places despite the consequent reduction in smokers (meaning less tax revenue) and significant negative effects for pubs with many more closing than would have otherwise. As a non-smoker I'm glad that this legislation was passed, but I strongly suspect it has led to a reduction in government income.

Try it out as an experiment. Get 2 mates with you, each take a lane of the motorway and all do bang on 70mph! See what happens behind you! :P

I am dead against this, but seriously, on most roads during the working week in business hours (and on Sundays unless you get up early), how many times can you actually maintain even the speed limit on most roads these days? One of the reasons I moved away from a sporty car this time and to be honest (and I like driving quickly!) I am not getting places any slower in my Evoque than I did in my Z4 (I know just going fast isn't the main reason we own sports cars mind)! I still have my motorbike for the speed thrill.

Now, if they brought those limiters in for motorcycles that would be extremely dangerous!!! :o

the ant thing it could be good..... and imagine the development it could lead to....

you join a queue of cars, its moving at a steady speed, maybe it slows a little at junctions or predetermined points. as you join your car takes over and hooks you into the car in front with a a radar cruise control. when your hooked in you are close enough to benefit from a slip stream so reduces consumption, you get to sit in comfort and read a book, watch a film, catch up on email. as you get to your predetermined place to leave the queue you take over. the car at the front would could be a specific car designed to be aerodynamic, maybe have a bigger efficient engine. it could have sensing equipment etc that comunicates with the other cars via a bluetooth/wifi thing so they know about hazards/when to slow/speed up.

mayeb they could develope specific lanes for these things that guide the wheels then you wont have to steer?

it sounds familiar but i cant quite place it ....

fucking speed limiter my arse!

I know what you mean. I followed a motorbike at the weekend who was obeying every speed limit and it was bloody annoying. I much prefer it when they speed off into the distance!

Outside the towns have you ever driven behind a 30mph restricted scooter?? Worse still I used to own one for commuting!! Outside the town that thing at bang on 30mph was just a plain scary experience as everything tried to overtake you and you had no extra speed to get you out of any trouble spots! I solved that problem by having it de-restricted! It then did over 60mph!! That was another level of scary mind!! :P

Smoking ban happened because of two reasons - strain on the health service for both active & passive smokers, and, to make it easier for the impressionable young not to have smoking co-coerced on them in social places, so not quite the same as previously stated, not the speed but bad driving that kills

Except the average smoker pays more in tax than they take from the NHS....
I agree though, it's bad driving that kills - although that may be inappropriate speed in some instances, it is not often absolute speed.

Double Yikes! :o :o 60MPH on a 2 foot wheel span. Did you call 999 just to let them know you were leaving the house on that thing? Did you ever get a tank slapper on that scooter from holding on so tightly?
