I recently emailed Tolltickets with the following enquiry.

My Question:

Is it possible to use a single transponder for tolls in multiple EU countries, rather than seperate ones for each country?

I plan on visiting France, Spain, Portugal and Italy soon.

Thank you,
.....

Tolltickets reply:

Dear ....

Thank you for your question to tolltickets and your interest in our products.

The European Commission works hard to harmonize the toll contexts. But still now you can only find a view interoperable (hybrid) contexts like for France and Spain. But these solutions are only for trucks (vehicles more than 3.5t GVW or over 3m height).

For cars only dedicated solutions are available. Therefore you have to use separate devices for each country.

....

Anyone with English as a first language able to translate the 2nd paragraph of the reply?

Judging by the final paragraph I think the gist is that car owners get ripped off multiple times for seperate transponders so each country gets a cut.

"The European Commission works hard to harmonize the toll contexts" it says, but obviously not hard enough. OK for trucks but not for cars? Enough to make you want to leave the EU in protest, eh!

Are they a UK-based company, if not the email may have not been written in English originally and been through Google translate? You should see some of the emails I get from Italian colleagues, that have been through Google translate. When you translate it back into Italian it makes perfect sense :)

Tapatalking...

They are saying unless you own a large fleet of vehicles, you will need a decent sized boot to carry all the various transponders. Everything else they said is just self serving hype.
