Has anybody here ESS installed on his Z4 ? Am planning to supercharge my Z4 and I want reccomendations ... I saw some videos on youtube and am impressed ...

I have the ESS Twin Screw Stage 2 kit :) It's awesome.... soooooooo much torque with full boost generated at 1800rpm.... drives like stock until you floor it. I've been running for almost 10K now without any major problems. A few smaller issues but they have been ironed out with the latest hardware and software.

Any specific questions just ask or PM me.

gwatson, a question for you. I would assume you twin screw is belt driven as the super charger is on the MINI Cooper. The belt drive cost mpg on the MINI. What kind of MPG did you loose when you went with the blower? The new MINI with the turbo does significantly better in the mpg than the blower version.

No, it's a completely different system, a mini used a roots supercharger, the ESS Twin Screw is a Lysholm. ESS say the belts drive on this system is so efficient it only costs the engine 2bhp. Do not consfuse this with the mini system which makes a horrible whiney noise and only makes max boost at max rpm.

As for fuel consumption, I've probably lost 1-2mpg max during a tank... I now average aound 27-28mpg (UK gallons). However, on a motorway run at say 75mph it's gone up slightly to around 35mpg and closer to 38mpg at 60mph.... To be honest the slight loss during day to day driving is probably due to my exhaust, I've heard it can have that effect.

Thanks for your reply, I find that interesting. I liked the supercharger, even the wine, on the MINI, but didn't care for the mpg loss. My Z actually gets much better mpg than the MINI did. My Porsche had a turbo and got 28mpg on the highway, still not as good as the Z. Losing 2-3mpg for a blower is ok!

gwatson, did you fit the kit yourself? If so, how simple was it. ESS reckon 6 hours with normal hand tools, but I'm skeptical.

I'll be trying to convince the missus that 'charging the zed makes more sense than swapping it for someting else....

No, my local independant took the challange on.... mechanically I am fine having owned kit cars, but I hate electrics.

Anyway, it took them around 12-14 hours to install...(6 hours dosn't sound likely) for a stage 2 kit, which involves a lot more work, removing the bumper, fitting intercooler etc. The earlier kits required a bit of custom work on brackets etc, but the niggly issues should have been smoothed out now and the install process made more efficient.

Well... that was my theory for the charger... totally transforms the car, just when I was thinking of changing, but couldn't find anything I like. It brings a grin to my face each time I take it out.
