Hi guys
Seeking a bit of advice... got a z4 coupe new to me engine light has popped on, whipped out obd reader and it's a rather generic. P2243 code. Called local bmw indie and he cant fit me in till thurs or fri next week....

Anyone had similar code and how far have you driven on it ? Indie seemed to think it was pretty generic and ok to drive car to him. I cant notice any performance issues so hoping it is just the basic o2 sensor !

Thanks I saw that. What does the o2 sensor do though ?! And should I be scared of a big bill :tumbleweed:

Hi, the o2 sensor sniffs the exhaust gas to determine the mixture strength with the ecu acting on its findings to tweak the duty cycle of the injectors to enrich or weaken the stoichiometric ratio
I may be wrong of course :P

Cheers Rob ! Sounds like a sensible enough answer to me ! :) I'm gonna go with drive it as little as possible ... shame as wanted to do a little boot up to oxford at the weekend

There are 4 off O2 sensors in total - 2 before the cat and 2 after. The 2 after the cat purely exist to check cat efficiency to are of little consequence, the 2 before the cat exist to correct the mixture towards the ideal stoich mix of 14.7 to 1 during idle and steady state throttle.

Note that 14.7 to 1 is simply the point at which the engine is operating at it's most efficient in terms of emissions. Whenever you accelerate or when the engine is cold the ratio required is far richer (around 12.6 to 1) and the o2 signal is ignored. So if you are going for a B road hoon, chances are the car is not actually looking at the signal from the o2 sensor very much anyway!

Cheers guys !
Somewhat reassuring ! Hopefully it's an easy ish fix ! I have had the car for not even 7 days
Was going to get off the run flats but will get this seen to first !
