Error code P2098 .

Evening all,
My 35i hasn’t been run for approx 2 weeks, my wife took it out today and reported engine light was on on the dash (amber engine symbol ) . She reported no issues in any way with car other than light has come on. So , I’ve plugged in my code reader and it has come up with P2098. Done a quick search on here and it hasn’t returned anything. A Quick google hasn’t returned much either other than the generic info. I’ve cleared the code , and will now see if it reappears later. Any info would be kindly received . I only have a basic scan tool , and was surprised it read and cleared it to be honest !

Seems quite a bit of info out there on that code.
I would seek out other non specific videos say YT as many times it seems it's something else causing a knock on effect.

Sounds like a fuel problem, delivery or sensor related or could even be bad fuel.

Not running that dodgy E10 are you

Info on the web does indicate it is fuel /cat /O2 sensor related. Hence it might just be a by product of the car sitting idle for a couple of weeks. I’d suggest clearing the code, as you have, give it an Italian tune up and check occasionally to see if the code comes back.

Agreed, gentle warm up, then a wee thrash. If your cars been stored for a while remember your tyre pressures will be well down now as the ambient temp has dropped.

As others said…you’d be much better off with a proper BMW diagnostic device but..

What causes the P2098 code?
The ECM is detecting the pre catalyst O2 sensor not working correctly and then monitors the post catalyst O2 sensor to see if the problem correlates to the pre catalyst O2 sensor on a two trip requirement.

The exhaust may have a leak or engine problem before the pre catalyst sensor.

The engine may have mechanical or fuel related issues causing the code.

The O2 sensor wiring or sensor is the failure.

So exhaust leak, air leak, lazy 02 sensor…see what happens with more running?

Seems to correlate with little use, some people reset the fuel trims adaptations and the problem disappears…

Hi clan ,
Yes agree with you all, pretty much what I found out on tinter web, so -
I cleared code , and went to pick wifey up from her xmas party , and it had as you state an Italian tune up !!!
car ran absolutely stunning 🤩, started first push , no issues , pulled like a train , good hour and half of use !! no codes have been thrown again !
So it looks like crisis over for the moment !!!!
Thanks all ,

Don't think the E10 fuel is the problem, I've read that leaving it sat for a while can cause separation issues but filling it and using straight away is unlikely to be the cause.

As others have said Italian tune up after resetting codes and see if it returns. Problem with O2 sensors is you don't know if they are at fault or working and identifying issues with fuel mix going into the exhaust.

If it first came on after changing from higher octane fuel then could be related to knock sensor perhaps :driving:

Well, you say that...................
But son-in-law borrowed the E85 3.0i for a trip to Sheffield, stopped to fill up and as he set off again the engine check light came on after about 20 miles.
My code reader threw up a few fuel/mixture related codes, which all cleared. Filled it up with E10 from a different garage and it's running fine. So, was it dodgy E10, or the car having a hissy fit until it got used to it?

E10 is known to have phase separation issues, my thoughts were leaving a car sat for a while then possible problems. When you think about it, if you get the dregs at the petrol station then it could contain higher amounts of water.

Mine only gets the finest and won't ever see E10 in my ownership.

For me it's worth a few Bob extra for peace of mind and a few more MPG

The tank of fuel will be used this week to get rid of it !!.
Personally I don’t think the fuel is the issue in this instance, just a hunch though .
Will see what this week brings , and I think some additive in the tank won’t go a miss and a good bit more higher engine speed for a few days !!
Wife now knows only the finest liquids are to be used !!
Again thanks for the advice it’s appreciated.

Think yourself lucky, the last time my wife put fuel in any of our cars was in 1985, and that was attendant service, the fuel gauge broke and she went back to complain they hadn’t put any petrol in, so now whenever we need fuel it’s down to me to fill it up.

Kind of with you there, but in hindsight I can't remember the last time I put the tea in the oven, so guess we're equal.

Horses for courses. I wash and sort 'her' car and she cooks my tea.
I build her a kitchen, she uses it for the next 10 years. I think that's called a fair and healthy relationship

But they will insist on keeping on leaving it!
I thought of that. Electro-magnets. Works a treat. I turn the power off just before bedtime; the girl needs her rest! :D

Did you know that a wedding dress is white because it matches the colour of the other domestic appliances
