Erratic heating - hedgehog?

...so I dared take the car to KwikFit to regas the aircon, thinking that would solve the issue, but no :(

Car warms up fine, but doesn't stay on a constant temperature, and the auto setting makes the interior unbearably hot on anything but 18 degrees.

Is this a hedgehog resistor thing? Or something more serious?
 
I had a similar issue on a 3 series E36 and it was a resistor issue. Not been a Z4 owner long enough to know if this is similar.
