1) Make sure he takes all rings off
2) Don't get an erection
3) Check he's an actual doctor BEFORE he starts (if his opening line is "I'll do yours if you do mine" he's probably not)

It's a common condition in the elderly and rarely heritable (most die with it, not from it). There are some genetic associations that predispose to Ca prostate at an early age (at least one of the BRCA genes that are associated with familial Ca breast carries an increased risk of Ca prostate) so perhaps those here with a family history are suspected of carrying an abnormally high genetic risk? I would suggest all men over 60 should consider screening by DRE and PSA measurement as it carries little morbidity and may allow detection at an earlier age.
OP, if the doc says, "Look mum, no hands" you should probably get off the couch asap :P

I'm not an epidemiologist, but there would be significant cost implications for the NHS screening all low-risk a symptomatic men over 50...

I know two guys for whom this simple check basically saved their lives; get on with it, it's nothing to be concerned about. I have regular bone marrow aspiration biopsies, now that is something to be concerned about and I feel sick even writing about it.
