EPS not working for first half mile

My new to me 2003 z4 has a constant issue of very stiff power steering (eps light on constantly) that goes away after the first half mile or so of driving. Then the power assist kicks in and it’s fine after that with not recurring problem until I turn it off and start it again. Any ideas ? Could I get it recalibrated?

First thing to do is to get a model-specific code reader to find out what error codes are there to locate the problem. Members nearby may have such a reader so perhaps give your rough location

As Ray says.
Could be a steering angle calibration required but I suspect it’s the first signs of the motor ecu failing.
You need to connect a code reader while it’s in the failed state. If it cannot communicate with the ecu then probably need a motor refurb.
Whereabouts are you?

As enuff_zed says, get a scanner on it to read the codes, it will have set codes as soon as the dash light appeared, sounds like the motor is on the way out to me but lets see what the codes tell you. If you need a code reader suggest you get a Creator 310+ or their latest one 410+ available on ebay annd Amazon, they won't break the bank and are worth their weight in gold being specific to BMW's.
Update your user details with your location and model of Z, it helps to see where you are and what you have got, help may be around the corner from local Z Forum members.

And if you need help I’ve done a few motors now. Dealers quote £3k plus to replace the whole column. I can get the motor off in around an hour, and back on in about the same. Send it to ECUTesting and they fix it with a lifetime warranty for £295. Means you’re without the car for a few days.

Thanks to all for the replies, I’m in the Salt Lake City, Utah area
Excellent! All I need is a return plane ticket and free lodging for a week or so.

Apologies, didn't realise you were 'over the pond'.

Still happy to help/advise if I can though. :D

Quick question, the YouTube videos mention cutting the dash support, is that needed?
That is to remove the whole column. To unbolt the motor there’s no need. An 8mm ratchet ring spanner to undo the two bolts. Unplug the large plug at the bottom then pull the motor out and wriggle it down. Have cutters close by to snip the cable ties on the top of the motor or that lead gets pulled tight. Once lowered you can then see to disconnect the other two plugs.
Before you start, use a permanent marker to draw a line across the column, spacer ring and motor to align them afterwards. Otherwise you could get the sticky steering issue.
Not sure if there’s anywhere over there that refurbished them but I think ecutesting may sort it. Postage will be expensive
