Entering the Z4 scene.

Hi all,

If your reading this I hope you are well. After browsing through the site for the last couple of months I have decided to sign up :).
Unfortunately I do not at this moment in time own a z4 but I am on a venture to purchase one in the near future and of which it will also be my first BMW. I currently own a Mazda Rx8 which like most of them has gone south; needing a full engine rebuild as the rotor fins have worn away and now has low compression. If anyone has experienced this you will know it's a huge pain in the a**. Whilst owning this car for the past few years it has put many a smile of my face when using all 10,000 Revs and of course rear wheel drive :).
So enough with the old, in the with new(soon). After already going though the "hairdresser" stage from my peers I will be sticking with the hardtop version of the Z the coupe! I have weighed up my options and as much as I would love to own the Z4MC I have decided that the 3.0si would be a better fit.
I haven't been able to test drive any at this point in time as I'm currently sat up at home with a broken ankle and foot thanks to a forklift running over it, just my luck. As soon as I can drive again I will be pursuing my endeavour to own a Z4 coupe.
Cheers for your time
Chris

Welcome Chris ,once you post a location a kind hearted Coupe owner may help you over your broken ankle by taking you out for a spin :driving:

hi and welcome even if you do want a tin top .hope your sorted with ankle soon so you can get looking .for sale section the place to look

Thanks for the welcome, I live in sunny Salisbury city (Wiltshire).

I've been reading many threads about common problems and such, the more i learn what to look out for the easier it will be for me to find one.

@bluestreak56, Never been a fan of an Auto, so that decision was easy. i always end up double footing the brake!!

Ideally, I would love a white one, but they seem pretty rare. After owning a black car for the last 3 years I can say I don't want another one.

Hi screech, good luck searching for an si-I have the 3 litre version & they are great cars :)
I also used to have an rx8 a few years back, I had a ltd edition evolve hi power model and used to hear the electronic beep at 9000rpm max revs many times :driving: you will find the z4 a lot more torquey!
Regards

Thats what I have sitting on the drive, it's a quick car don"t get me wrong but a pathetic amount of torque. Hopefully the z4 will be a tail happy as the rx8

Welcome aboard Chris. I like the RX8 & was very tempted, as a Daily. But like you say they die, so have settled for a Mazda3 Sport. Good look hunting and hope your foot fixes soon. :)

We almost bought an RX8 a few years ago but was put off by the warnings of just a matter of time before the engine went bang.
Also was the cost of road tax between March and April 2006 models. One was £200 odd and the other was over £400. Same car just a different registration date.
Shame another more reliable engine cannot be fitted to these as they are great looking cars.

Hi & welcome
hope you are fit & well soon & find your Zed (even if it is a tin top) would be great to see you about on some drives with us West Country folk.

Fair enough, everyone has their own taste when it comes to gearboxes. Having driven both I preferred the auto, but I was spoilt by the auto on my E24 before the E86..

The reliability of the rx8 wasn't an issue at the time of purchase as she had only done 38,000, and being 23 at the time it ticked all the boxes for what i could insure for decent money. If i had the knowledge to put a reliable engine in it say, a 330 block i would. I might just donate her as a track car but i think she will only last a few laps!!! :driving:

Now on the the z front, Im sure that that 3.0si has a better mph that the rx8 as most things do and hopefully they are more reliable. The coupe that i would be looking for would be under the 60,000 mile mark, is that before or after the 2nd inspection? and is there any common problems that i should be aware of for a car that will be about 6-7 years old?

Hi Chris, welcome along. Hope you find a coupe with the right spec that meets your criteria. I wouldn't let high mileage put you off too much, general condition and history is just as important.

If you search on here I am sure there is a general buying guide somewhere..... Enjoy

Hi Screech,

Hope you ankle heals well and you're on your feet as soon as . . .

The coupe has it's enthusiasts and you should be able to get lots of advice and encouragement on the forum - but be ready for the coupe /roadster banter.

Beautiful looking Zed - the roof motor concern is negated as well. I'd be checking tyres (non runflats sport preferred) and condition. It's a sports car with great potential so brakes, discs and pads worth checking on. Any suspension work (springs often break) is an added bonus. The foglights tend to corrode so check them out. Then if you read through the buying guide on the forum the specifics will be covered. The Zed has long service intervals so you may find a surprisingly slim service history at the mileage you mention. Most owners prefer to see more regular oil changes but both of my Zeds had long service intervals and neither has let me down.

Good luck with your search and welcome to the forum.

:driving:

Once again, thank you for the replies. I have read the different threads about buying a used Z and they are very useful. I had runflats before and they are horrid to drive with to say the least. Was thinking about changing them out for a set for toyo 888s? anybody use these for daily use as i know they are pretty good track tires.

I will be looking to spend around £12,000 -£13000 on the coupe maybe a tad more if the right one catches my eye.

@dale_b, sell me yours :P

Don't know if it appeals or is right but occasionally an M coupe does appear at that money, but they seem to be strengthening. I believe there was a 100k miler at £10k or so
