What are peoples understanding and opinions of this group?

As a non-practicing Iranian Muslim I must admit their fundental ideology (or the ideology they protray on their online forum - http://englishdefenceleague.org/about-us/mission-statement/) seems to be reasonable to me and not racist in any way.

Thoughts?

I watched a TV documentary on them recently and couldn't make up my mind. There were some good points and some aspects which severely damaged their credibility of course we will never know how the shows editors chose to portray them but their leadership certainly aren't among the fizziest drinks in the fridge . :)

i support them and the media always put a bad twist on any hardline group. their not racist although 99% are white there are some other races which take part in the marches

I guess just because the majority are of one race donesn't mean they are racist.
they do however (understandably) have a incorrect view of Islam. It's the so called Muslims who abuse it, which give it a bad name, so they believe it's within the religion when it's not (e.g. killing innocent people - killing is a sin in eyes of Islam, so does not condone it).

A growing number of disillusioned, disempowered people whose voices have been muted for too long -

unfortunately in our society the minority have the loudest voice and the final say in too many matters.

Whether or not I would want to associate myself with the EDL ideology and mission statement I most definitely do not wish to associate myself with those you see on the streets at the rallies... balaclavas, hoodies, skinheads... it's all very aggressive and does no good in swaying public opinion their way.

The mission statement is quite well worded and in that respect I do agree with them. Having lives in other parts of the world I know what it is like to have respect for the country you are in, and in essence that is what the mission statement is saying, at least in part.

Unfortunately in any group there are people who take advantage of.
Islam has it's "Extremists" who in my view are NOT true Muslims and the EDL has it's racists thugs, but IMO as a group Islam is not extreme nor are the EDL racist.

Agreed

However if you look closer you will see that a large percentage of what is supposed to be 'The anti fascist league' who counter EDL marches, you will see the same type of idiots mixed with them - although this element is never reported in the media...

My opinion is that they are presenting some legitimate concerns in a very bad way.

They do come across as threatening and spoiling for a fight. The interview with the organiser on TV just confirmed my opinion of them. Looked like he couldnt string two words together let alone sentences and was half cut.

Yes immigration is a touchy subject, yes there is a lack of trust in the leaders we elect to represent our views. Very much is there a degradation of the morality and ethics in the high end business world.

This all builds up to give some of the ugly scenes that we see. You have rising unemployment, the rich getting richer, immigration seemingly uncontrolled pressurising the incumbent population. (That includes every race in the UK) it naturally leads to groups like these.

The problem with the EDL, as others have already highlighted, is that the public persona is ugly and aggressive and appears to be stocked with people who have been or are card carrying members of the BNP. They always seem to be spoiling for a fight which is why the hold their marches in the most provocative locations.

So whilst I may have some sympathy for the message I don't trust the messengers.

TBH I had never heard of it before, but then it is the ENGLISH defence league and after having read their mission statement I do find it racist towards the rest of Great Britain. (Kidding)
Their mission statement does not come across as racist or negative towards Muslims infact just the opposite, they are not calling for Muslims to be Isolated or kicked out.
But as Original Guvnor says "I don't trust the messengers".

I believe the chap in that interview was at one time the president of the Oxford University Debating Society

Liam-O, There will always be people like that on both sides, but also people who take up a discussion too and try and actually do something about their cause... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDGR6AXgGw4&feature=related

That guy in Peddy's link, is it just me or is he an Aussie, not that it matters I am just trying to place the accent. :?
