Hi went to start the car today. Turned the key all the dash lights radio and heater fan all kicked in. carried on turning the key and nothing! Up till today I have not had an issue no slow cranking or slow to catch. Got the other half to turn the key whilst bonnet open and I can hear a single click for the starter motor and a slight electrical hum from the intake vale thing. the battery is fairly new and when I turn the key there doe snot seam to be a noticeable drop in voltage. Have tried the spare key ignition lights fan etc all work. but still no response. I have tapped the starter motor and rocked the car in gear to shift the crank position. Any one got any ideas? 3.0i manual. Steve.

check battery too, if its not producing enough that too could be problem. Just cos theres power for light etc, doesnt mean starter could turn.

but ye most likely thing would be starter failing, hit it with hammer ;)

Not sure on a z4, but typically you can get a spanner and turn the centre spindle of the starter motor by, say 1/4 turn, to release it then try to start as normal. Worth a quick check.

B.M.W........Now stands for Busted Motor Wacked! My other half told me I was not hitting the starter motor hard enough...so following her advice got man size club hammer and hey presto running car. So now have new addition to the boot and smug Mrs. Thanks for the advice posters a least I know what's wrong and can get a new starter next week and more importantly I can get to work on bank holiday Monday. Thanks Steve.

Tap the starter a little harder while another person is in the car turning the key to the start position but before that, charge battery to ensure its fully charged.

Had exactly the same thing, As Fastatv said, get someone to try and start it while you tap the solenoid part of the starter but don't be fooled and think it will last you, it may get you through a day but will fail again just when you don't need it to, like in the forecourt of a garage when getting petrol!?. Believe me I've been there

BMC drivers used to keep a mallet in the glove box to 'help' the starter until pay day, OK in a Marina not cool in a Zed :D

me mate in old car carried a metal pole n wacked hi each time it didnt work, lasted years. tbh it could do this for ages or it might never.
