Engine whine - Z4 3.0si Coupe

Hi all!

I finally picked up my new Z4 Coupe 10 days ago and am loving it so far! However I have noticed a strange noise which may well be very normal and make me look a muppet in asking it!

On up shifts there is a whining sound as I come off the power and push the clutch in - between most gears, hot or cold.

Is it normal and I'm going mad or something that's not normal?

Thanks!
Alex

No aftermarket sound system installed!

It's just like - pull away - revs up to 3-4k, clutch pedal in off the gas - Whiney sound - finish shift, back on gas sound completely gone....

Does it just happen when you depress the clutch?
Yes just when the clutch is pressed - Once the change is over and power back on nothing - very short lived. Might just be a characteristic of the engine but it's my first one!

Sometimes a slight hint on downshifts but nothing much.

Like I say it could just be me worrying about nothing..

I get it, put it down to having a pipercross air filter (recently recleaned and lightly oiled) - quite like the sound

Aha - thanks for the reply. It has a K&N air filter so that could explain it?

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Fear of the unknown and all that...

Normally a whine when the clutch is depressed points to a clutch release bearing.
If it is this, it will make the noise even when stationary with the engine running when you press down the clutch.

Nothing at all when stationary. Think the air filter is the most plausible explanation as things stand!

Reason for thinking its the air filter is simple - never had it with the stock filter, always had it since. Unless its coincidence ....
