Engine warning light, what's the problem?

Alright folks, looking for a bit of your collective knowledge and opinions on this one:

Two days ago, when i was up north, the engine warning light came on my dash. Looked it up and it says "exhaust emissions have significantly deteriorated" or something similar. No other symptoms of a problem that i could see.

Guy from work used to be a mechanic and he gave the car a very quick look last night, the oil was a chocolately brown colour and smelled a little like petrol (not strongly). There was also gunk in the cap of the same colour. I also get, in my opinion, quite alot of white smoke from the exhaust - however i have been putting this down to the cold weather. I wouldn't consider it excessive.

He showed me the large pipe that goes from the coolant to the engine and told me to give it a squeeze after a 30min journey to see if it was still soft like it was on startup. It wasn't, it was quite firm and very hot. Does this indicate a problem?

Bear in mind the last service was possibly excess of 12k ago.

It's booked into BMW anyway for tomorrow however I do like 2nd 3rd and 4th opinions, as reputable as BMW are they are still in the motor trade :)

Cheers, Rob.

Mine came on due to a cracked air intake pipe... As mentioned it could be a number of things, usually all connected with air into and out of the engine.

Lambda sensor is most common. They usually last 60k-90k miles (ish). Replacement on my 3 series was £120 fitted by an Indy garage. Will probs be more on a zed

Ach well first post on the problem page , driving home from work last night the car was running great, as it has done for the past 2 years. This morning started ,however, missing on one or more cylinders , then throws up the engine warning light . Adamski , cheers Ill check the hoses , Tino where is the mass air sensor . Daughters boy friend is comming round with his fault reader ,im sure ittl be showig some fault codes , which more likely than not Ill find on the forum , at this moment with research IV done on the forum looks as though it may be the lambada sensors . This is a fantastic resource for anyone with a zed ,,,,,cheers guys

Ok ! got the diagnostic reader on the car , showing a fault PO 302 , which is misfire on cylinder 2 , Im thinking its a coil , If any of you guys that are more knowledgable than myself, feel free to add your input ,,,,,

Gerry, would have been better starting this in a new thread rather than tagging onto another one. :)

you right Alan , my search for ,engine warning light threw up this thread ,which I found usefull . So this weekend ( if I get the time ) new sparkplugs and coils , hope thats it sorted . Ill let you know how I get on .

Bought 1 No coil pack, replaced the coil to cylynder 2 ,started the car and hey presto running as smooth as ever . Shipkillers 'How To' on changing sparkplugs was a great help  .
