Engine valve check essential

Hello all.

Just a quick note to anyone who finds their car's engine (S54B32) not running as smoothly. Symptoms like prolonged starting cycle, roough idle, excessive noise from the engine (hard I know, its a Noisy so and so ) increase in petrol consumption. Increase oin noise too, more gas pedal required travelling at low speed, slower pickup of revs.

Get engine valve clearance checked and corrected, particularly exhaust side. Too few garages check those as part of the Insp 2 service as it is costly, takes time and requires specialist Equipment. Failure to do it will NOT necessarily show up as fault codes in the EMS and no warning light will come up. However, you are subjecting your engine's camsafts to exessive wear, and that's a costly replacement.

Had mine done, and she's purring like a kitten. Much nicer to drive too!

I had wondered about this; mine is 2k away from inspection 2 and despite being AUC no paperwork was presented to show valve adjustment for insp 1 shortly before it was sold to me... I have my doubts

Will be using a specialist to get this done shortly

Only needed a couple over the 3 checks mine's had.

The e34 M5 however, needed at least one every time it had an inspection (about every 12,000 miles)

Although in the case of the M5, if the engine was quiet it meant the clearances were probably too tight and needed adjusting. Although they did tend to give their most power just before they went bang

the guy over here at Delage showed me the photos of the camshaft/ crankshaft (sorry my transmlation ois rubbish and I'm a mechanical dummy) and said that it showed some wear and that if noise returned I would have to change it.

Just makes me think that a lot of people on this forum question the noiosy and rough running of their engine and this is a relatively cheap job to be done for less fuel consumption and peace of mind.
