Engine ticking/tapping query

Been into dealer and they are still investigating, they think they found something in the fuel pump, however the metallic ticking noise or vibration still seems to be there. It appears linked to the throttle and it increases when I depress the throttle. Strangely it seems more obvious in the car than outside? Tried to record it and put it and on YouTube! Anyone else here this with their new 2.0 / 28 engines?

Hi here's the video of my metallic ticking sound. Local dealership been v helpful and so far replaced fuel pump and all injectors, seems to be a bit better but still irrating metallic tick there above 1200 ish rpm, could this just be noisy injectors? What's really strange is this sound you can only really here inside the car? Anyone any ideas? Cheers MTF

MTF - Apparently that ticking sound your hearing linked to the throttle is normal on 2.0 engines I believe. See a previous thread I created on it :) http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=51070

:( plot continues unfortunately. I have now listened to a new 2013 Z4 28i and it does not have this sound, so gone back to BMW, they have tried re-programming car and also tried fitting a part to provide more sound insulation to the pump, both made no difference unfortunately.

Have also listened to a new Z2 2.0 and can detect the sound but for some reason it's amplified and much louder in my car??

Now gone upto BMW Custoemr Service and BMW Technical , will keep you posted!

Mine was making noises similar to those posted in the first page of this thread a week after I picked it up, left it with BMW for a week while I was on holiday. They updated the ECU which made it a little less noisy, and then replaced the hydraulic tappets under warranty - now it's as silent as I expect :)

Just got my 3.0i back from the dealers after warranty work on the tappets, also had the software update which made no difference, just hoping it will now be as quiet as it should be.

I have had my hydraulic tappets replaced (exhaust only) and ecu updated but the tapping still appears for about 1 min on cold start up, previously the engine would tap for a long time. Do you still hear tapping on initial cold startup (if left overnight) or has it gone completely? I will probably get the dealer to have another look.

So far it seems ok, no noise, but early days. Previously it didnt come in until about 2 mins after starting and lasted a good few mins afterwards, it also happened restarting the car after 3 or 4 hours ie not completely cold. I would let them have another look.

well the dealer heard the tapping after leaving the car with them and have been back and fourth with techs at bmw for the next stage, and apparently there has been a modified cylinder head with new valves which stops this issue. So I am getting a new head under warranty, which is a bit of luck as the warranty is up soon. My car is a late 2011 model so the last of the 6 cylinders before the turbos came out, which I thought would have had all the bugs ironed out! still at least it is being fixed.

I think Maniac may know for sure but my understanding is that the modified cylinder head was for much older models (2009?). If yours is a 2011 - the same as mine - then you should already have it and I'm not aware that BMW released any modifications after this... :?

That's what I thought! I did a bit of checking around the internet and it seems I should have the new head. Maybe there is another problem with my head which they are not telling me but the service advisor said this head has modified valves.....whatever that means!

This cylinder head was introduced way back. Mine was replaced in April 2009 on my E85. Can't believe newer cars even slightly different would still have this issue.

There you go - from the horse's mouth. Well, srhutch's. :D Might be worth confirming with the dealer precisely what they're doing. If it were me, I'd just want to know but I guess if they hand it back and it's lovely and quiet (as mine is now) then that's the main thing. :)

I'm afraid you have to open your eyes with BMW, they do tend to have a history of carrying the same design faults throughout an engines history from one engine to the next, for example premature timing chain failure on N47 engines, BMW quoted this problem had been solved with the new F20 1 Series models, unfortunately it hasn't.

Tim.

I will check with them and see what it is in more detail but will let them get on with replacing the head (which may be a while as the part is on back order). I have always loved the sound of BMW 6's and the tapping is pretty annoying. Other than that still loving the car and will keep for a good while.
