The new cylinder head was fitted yesterday, apparently it was a complete assembled head from the factory including new camshaft, lifters, etc. Started this morning and all is quiet! will see how it goes but hopefully the tapping won't return, engine feels much smoother too. Also had a new folding mirror replaced (as it decided not to stop and continue all the way up until it hit the window!) and wind noise issues fixed too, so glad to get all this done before the warranty runs out. I guess with the new head I should take it easy for a few miles and run it in a bit? dealer said I shouldn't need to but thought with a complete new top end I will probably play safe and be a bit gentle.

MTF said:plot continues unfortunately. I have now listened to a new 2013 Z4 28i and it does not have this sound, so gone back to BMW, they have tried re-programming car and also tried fitting a part to provide more sound insulation to the pump, both made no difference unfortunately.
Have also listened to a new Z2 2.0 and can detect the sound but for some reason it's amplified and much louder in my car??
Now gone upto BMW Custoemr Service and BMW Technical , will keep you posted!
Now that's funny in a sad and maddening way. Yes sir, we can fix that noise. Here you go mate. A brand new set of BMW earplugs.
Hi my e89 2011 z4 makes this tapping noise on start up then clears as its been driven. I have had to add 1lt of oil recently , just returned from holiday and its now asking for another 1lt . zero oil on my drive so no leaks, i suspect a faulty oil level sensor tho this reading came back on a stone cold engine within a minute of starting it up? Any ideas
