Engine temp in Red - Cool engine

Hi all,

I was driving my Z4 last night, from a cold engine within 6-7 miles the engine shot into the red. I pulled over and turned the car off, my fan stayed on for no more than 5-10 seconds, when I opened the bonnet the engine was cool, no heat coming from it. I left it for 1 minute then started the car again, the temp was midway, when I drove down the road it would rise, but if I put the car in neutral it would begin to drop. I continued my 5 mile journey home, each time pulling over and as I'd stop the fan would kick in for a couple of seconds and then switch off, again each time there was no signs of overheating. On occasion the battery was almost flat when starting the car.

Has anyone got ideas? I was reading that this could be the thermostat or waterpump?

2007 Z4, 67k, N52 engine, 3.0si

Thanks,
Charlie

Un-oh, sounds like waterpump or thermostat is failing/failed. U can rule out the fan perhaps as you said u could after hearing it running.
U check coolant level?
Battery will lose charge if stopping and starting as its not being recharged enough after each start.

Electric waterpump looks like the issue.

Doesn't circulate so block gets hot and temp indicator hits red. No heat in rad as only cool water and fan doesn't need to run.

Several threads on here about replacement, but don't drive it at all until fault confirmed and fixed else you risk severe internal engine dama if it is indeed to pump.

Obviously check coolant level as the first step to eliminate the simple
