engine stalls when first cold start up

05 Z4 with the 2.5 ltr. 118000 miles, The engine stalls at least 3-4 times when first started in the morning, also sometimes the idle surges at over 2 grand with no throttle control affecting it, after the 4th time stalling & restarting it runs fine & can drive away with no other issues starts up fine after that until cold again. The VANOS system was just rebuilt. No codes or check engine light, however when the idle surges the dash lights up like a Christmas tree.
Need some ideas on what could be bad.

Sounds like camshaft sensor or your coil packs. If its stalling more lilkely the inllet camshaft sensor get a diagnostic done it will tell you the error code it gave when it stalled. Sensor is about £30 max from ecp/gsf maybe cheaper if you look on ebay

Could be anything really. Intake system, cam posn sensor, sticky ICV, ruptured CCV diaphragm, fuel pump/filter.
Obd scan ftw.
Report back here with codes and we may be able to assist further....

Took several times for the car to finally idle & the engine temperature had gone up so then it runs perfect after it's warm. No check engine light or codes present, fuel pressure was around 58psi

could be anything your car needs bmw diagnostic or your just guessing and wasting time with scenarios

Had to take it to parts store cause my code reader wont show any codes, It has P0102 MAF Circuit Low Input ,P1634 Throttle Valve Adaptation; Spring Test Failed ,p16A2 ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) INTERNAL CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION.

The MAF code I likely caused that, I unplugged the sensor while it was running before it stalled again. The throttle spring might be from floor boarding the throttle while the car was doing it's "idle surging". The ECM malfunction IDK.
Does anyone know of a company that makes kits to swap in a Chevy LS engine into the Z4?

The surging idle is exactly what i experienced as the precursor to my long and arduous journey to getting my own zed back up and running and would suggest your throttlebody is on the way out.

Replaced mine with a cheap 2nd hand one from ebay and it's been running/idling fine ever since. Intended to replace with a new one since but it's fine as is.

Ok , so now intermittently the car will not start, cranks over & when I get set up to check for spark it of course starts up, fuel pressure is good, the latest codes are P16A2, P1634, P0102. The P16A2 comes on instantly when cranking it over.
