Engine Sound in Cabin ?

If my memory serves me correct the early Z4 E85's had a sound tube to send engine sounds to the cabin. But the E89 has the engine sound broadcast from the audio system. If this is true, can the engine sound be coded out on the E89?

Yes, you are correct. The early Z4 E85 used a special tube to bring engine noises inside the car's cabin. But in the newer model E89, they use the audio system to make fake engine sounds that you can hear while driving. In E89, you can usually turn off the engine sound feature if desired. This often needs special BMW coding software and may take some technical knowledge or expert assistance to make these changes. Maybe good idea to speak with coding expert or BMW specialist to ensure it is done in right way.

ASD active sound design was only fitted to N20 powered E89s…

In this early version you can’t code it out…you need to use a bypass harness to remove the injection of fake sounds into the audio system…

I’ve owned a 2003 E85 3.0i. It did not have the sound tube to the firewall. I remember an indie showing it to me on another E85, but I cannot remember the trim.

Useful info.

If the radio is switched off, presumably you don't hear this "active sound"? Is that how it works?

As stated the ASD is always on..even if the radio is ‘off’…
